  1. HI all.

I've got about 1 pound of beewax , the thing is, I use this cane of beewax for cleaning and feed wood tables, old fornitures, my shotguns (the wood part) , and so on...

Now I was wondering is the beewax you use for leatherworking the usual beewax that people use even for wood.

On the label of the cane beewax I have It reads" pure high quility of beewax with white spirit".

Since I'm going to place a order about leatherworking tools, I would like to know if I can avoid to buy beewax or not.

    tnx in advance

  2. I've used the 5 cord and 6 cord, and there's not much of a noticeable difference. I like the 6 cord a little better because it fills the stitch groove a little more evenly, The downside is when you stitch closer together, it looks a little bulky. 6 cord at 5 stitches per inch is about perfect in my opinion to fill the groove and not look bunched up. Smaller cord, more stitches per inch, larger cord, less stitches, but unless you're going wildly out of scale, either one will do the job just fine.

    Howdy,

a thousand thanks, really really helpful...:You_Rock_Emoticon:

    anybody else?

  3. Howdy,

I'd like to try out the Barbour 5, 6, and 7 ply cords to get an idea of what each is like before I buy an entire roll for $46.50.I thought maybe it might be more economical to try to buy a small amount from a member here, if that would be possible?. The thing is, I live in Italy and I have to pay around $25 for shipping plus another 25% when it arrives in Italy for taxes, duty and extra VAT for a grand total of about $85. Lots of bucks for just a

whim, but I've read so many good things about Barbour linen thread that I decided to try it out.

Of course I am willing to pay the shipping costs in addition to paying for the threads.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  4. Almost all of the stitch groovers are adjustable and you definitely want that. As far as creasers, it really depends. The newer adjustable ones have a rounded profile and splay out more than the older ones. They tend to wander more and leave a wider impression that is not as precise or crisp as the old ones. The downside is that the older CS Osbornes and some of the English made ones are hard to find in good shape. The upside is that with a good adjustable crease, you only need one. They can doulbe as an edge crease or use them to lay down tracks for a beadline. Used on an edge, they won't round over and compress that edge like an edge creaser will though.

If you go with the sized creasers, you are probably going to need a few sizes. The edge creasers have one leg longer to ride the edge and the profile will round over the edge and compress it also. The bead creasers have both legs the same length and will mark off and burnish a beadline.

Thanks Mr Johnson, Your explanation has been very helpful :)

  5. Howdy.

This is something like a opinion pollbiggrin.gif

I am wavering in between to buy a roll of #5 or #6 cord Barbour linen thread.

I know that for sheaths #5 cord it's strong enough(35lb tensile strength) it's not that the problem, I am talking about the "look".

Do you think for general use #6 cord is "too big/thick" (as look)?

Do you guys notice LOTS of difference between barbour #5 or #6 cord ?

I mean, can you say with just a glance that a sheath has been sewn with a 5# cord insted of #6 cord ? or the is it the difference barely noticeable?.

Every answer will be VERY appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    PS.

Maybe I will use just few yards of that thread, and since it's exepensive(and I CAN'T find just 10/20 yardsredface.gif) at least I want to be sure to buy the right size for me.

  6. It looks close to it, but idk for sure. It might be waxed or be the wrong size, hard to tell from a picture.

I just got the thread from Campbell, it's expensive, but that $46 is going to last a hand stitcher a looooooooong time. I think I used up a couple little 50 yard waxed spools before I got this one, and I should have just gotten this one first. I still use some waxed poly cord for colored stitching, it's cheaper and comes in 4oz spools, but not as nice as the linen threads. And the whole point of leatherworking is to not use plastic and synthetics, right?

    Absolutely agree with you mate:spoton:

    Ps

How much did you pay for shipping?

  7. Hi everyone

Is there anyone who can tell me what kind of thread is in the pictures below?

I got that spool about 15 years ago from a friend of mine---someone left it in his shop.

The only thing I can say is that the thread in the picture is very strong, waxed and flat

Do you think ti's linen? Or synthetic?

I would like to compare it to Barbour linen thread (I have to buy a roll but I'm not sure about the size).

If it were Barbour what size would it be?

    Thanks in advance

Boockaroogal"you can purchase it at abbey saddlery in england. they have a website."

Mhhhhhhh that site seems to sell just to trades:unsure:

They sell 1lb I am looking for 50gm or something small...

The problem is that thread it's very exepensive ($46.65)and I should see the difference (since I am new in leatherworking) among 18/3 18/4 18/5 18/7.:dunno:

    Thanks anyway.
