"Master Rose" award certificate on leather
OrchidNoir commented on OrchidNoir's gallery image in Our Leatherwork Galleries
Shadow, I am so sorry I didn't see this earlier, trying to move. I actually had to do the lettering on this one with a Sharpie marker that I had cut to a chisel tip for calligraphy. Awful, IMO, but the only real option I had at the moment with short time and a very sparse desk as far as tools. *blush* -

From the album: Gotta REstart somewhere
There is a game I play, it has an entire society that has grown around it, and in that society are awards to recognize various aspects. This award is a Masterhood in the Order of the Rose. Order of the Rose is an award "track" that was designed to recognize and show appreciation for service to the club, in as such, it is a very wonderful thing in my eyes. There is one of these that I previously posted from a year ago in this folder. I like to think I've come a ways since then, even not being able to give as much time to this as I'd like. The tooling is all done with the stylus tools from Tandy, no mallet work. I wanted to try it. The lettering was done this way as well, and finished with an antique stain. The color is acrylics. The wonderful Lady that was (finally) recognized with this one is even a member here, sadly I did not get to be there to see her face when she received this, but I was thrilled to learn she adores it.© © 2012 G. 1st: Love it 2nd: I second wanting to see it on and with the rest of the costume 3rd: My StarWars junkie side is envious of the doll (they were sold out around me every time I went looking for one)

Have a project due next weekend that has to be gilded, well... it's been almost as long since I did gilding as it was since I played with leather on the makin' end. It's a Christmas ornament for my tree, figured that was a good "see how I do after so long" project. Leather from a cheap belly black createx airbrush acrylic to give a better surface for the sizing (the sticky stuff) to bond to gum trag for edges and back (wanted a firmer finish back there for an ornament) sizing "gold" leaf (copper/tin fake gold, much cheaper, also easier to handle any mess ups.) acrylic "inks" (transparent acrylics with extra small pigment size) gilding spray sealer The design is just lined in with a scribe instead of full tooling as this was about the gilding and inking, and the circle isn't cut as close to perfect as I would have gone for on a "real" project... just not enough time to go for as good as I would have liked to if not for looming deadlines on projects for others. I love it on the tree. I'll likely end up making myself some more of these after the commitment projects are done. :-)© ©Orchid Noir Creations 2011

Braiding Mystery Braid Bracelet - Video
OrchidNoir replied to Ann McGrath's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thank you! I am an observer type learner and this is just what I need; a no frills, no bs, well presented, and easy to see how-to. -
I think I might hate it before too long... as my husband is going to want me to either make it for him (eep) or to guide him through making it himself (uh-oh) It is beautiful, really, I just dread the coming series of unfortunate events. lol

Head Band
OrchidNoir replied to Jonny Mohr's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Niiice! I'm in the middle of doing a wad of headwear (circlets, coronets, and crowns), and I really, really like this one. Very pretty. -
The Createx airbrush acrylics should not behave that way (OP), I agree with the old/bad/expired totally. As to the consistency, this line doesn't start in the toothpaste range, but rather already in the milk-ish range. I use them especially for their metallic/pear/iridescent lines, those are just dreamy to use as long as they are kept well mixed, and no, I don't currently own an airbrush. ;-) I will also totally second the Golden line, can't say anything on the Angelus because I haven't tried them personally, but I can say that I also like Liquitex for acrylics.

I'd be more than happy to unburden you of the purple leather, you know... just to help out. *insert drooling emoticon here* Hats! Winter weather is moving in and leather hats are wonderful. Top hats, military type hats, renaissance style or inspired hats, whatever... Not saying use it all for hats, but I'd definitely consider tossing some in the to-do pile if I had a surplus of leather I wanted to make some easily marketable items from.

PyroLace and RexLace are compatible, are they not? I swear I remember mixing those two in the same projects when I was the art&craft instructor at a summer camp, but that's been a "few" years. Either way, I get the RexLace every once in a while to play with my kiddo with it and it's still out there all over the place for sale. (I think even Tandy's carries it)

Who's Going To The Wichita Falls Show?
OrchidNoir replied to Rod and Denise Nikkel's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Me and mine plan on making it up and over there. Figure it's just a couple of hours away and should be able to help me get back into this rabbit hole even further. (don't look for purple, the hair is currently just brown. lol) -
Hi gparrish I'm not north of Dallas yet (more a little north of FW right now), but we plan on moving back up to the Denton are next spring/summer. I know, fat lot o' good that does this year. lol Stick around and dig around, this place is so full of info that when I think I have a question to post I have yet to not find an answer. It is awesome and so are the forumites.

You are such an inspiration. Period. I love going to look at your galleries, especially when I need that extra kick of motivation to get over to the bench and just work on something, anything, to keep progressing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with the world, it needs all the beauty and wonder it can get.

Thank you :-) Yes, that is a picture of me, when I can keep my hair that purple I do, but they like to discontinue the color or the entire product line as soon as I find a product that works and is the right color. lol I love that photo of them, too, it makes any day instantly better to pull it up and look at it. The tools, well, I was angry for a long time over those, I was young, I grew up and realized that those tools would never compare to what he taught me with them, though, and finally let go of anything more than wistfully wishing I had them. If he could be proud of me for sticking to my guns on liking my hair purple and fighting the schools to keep it way back when (yup, the picture is much newer than that), as old school as he was, I like to think he's proud that I'm not letting anyone take the leather away from me, either. BTW, it's too hot to even work on my leather, so I am tending to , sorry. rofl I was here for the 80's heat wave, this one can be finished now.

Thank you bentley, King's X, and capsterdog. I haven't made it to posting more because I am still slowly working through and chewing on all the wonderful information here. Bentley, yes, very much so, and a lot of bike like remembering. I am a proponent of the search function in forii, and so far answers have presented themselves for me via that method, but I can say in all earnest that from what I've seen in my crawling that I have no fear of posting a question here that I can't find an answer for already posted. ;-) It is so rare to find a forum that doesn't require the donning of iron knickers in fear of posting a "stoopid" question anymore, this site is a breath of fresh air.

"Belt Favor" (1st item getting back in the saddle)
OrchidNoir posted a gallery image in Our Leatherwork Galleries
From the album: Gotta REstart somewhere
First "finished" piece after 17+ years out of this type of work. I know the edges aren't done, I'm having to get tools and stuff one or two every month or so, beveler and edge burnisher are next on the list. Sometimes I can be almost too patient. lol© © Orchid Noir Creations

This one was pretty much swivel cut and painted. I was cutting the time close and still had the special award (Amtgard Master Rose) to draw up and create. The recipient was very happy with it, so I'll call it that I'm happy enough with it. ;-)© © Orchid Noir Creations

From the album: Gotta REstart somewhere
There were two between this one and the first one (also posted), this one was done as the award for a challenge/competition for creating crowns for the officers of the game I play (Amtgard). I see decent improvement over the first one, PLENTY of room for impovement left, and the lady that won this one says "I absolutely love it ," and I'm proud of it, so there ya go: Improvement, can see room for more improvement, recipient happy, creator not disguhsted... not a fail in my book. lol And as stated on another picture, I don't have the stuff to finish edges quite yet, hence the unfinished edges. I don't ding myself on that, I just couldn't get the stuff to do it yet.© © Orchid Noir Creations

"Master Rose" award certificate on leather
OrchidNoir posted a gallery image in Our Leatherwork Galleries
From the album: Gotta REstart somewhere
And this is what got me off my tush and doing more than just piddling around with some scraps to "get a feel for it again." In the game that I am a part of, Amtgard, the "Order of the Rose" is the award given to someone for service to, or done in the name of, the game. The Kingdom (or regional organizational body) sometimes decides that someone has done or achieved enough in one of the awarded aspects of the game to confer a Masterhood. This is not an easy thing to attain. I knew I would kick myself if I didn't do something special for this person, some things a printed out piece of paper just doesn't cut it for, and I had gotten the stuff to get back into leather tooling..... match made in Heaven. Tooling went fairly smoothly for the small number of tools I have to start with. I still need to work on getting those bevels to come out as smooth as I'd like. I need to get the right tools for the job at hand. I am thrilled with the rose and the background for it I went with. The painted knotwork... well, I think that would have gone better with the afore mentioned right tools. The rest of the Knotwork on the document border, as opposed to the rose border, I'm happy with for where I am on picking the tools back up. The antiquing gave me a little trouble. My last antiquing was doing ceramics, just a different set of skills I need to re-develop. Again, I am working on having the spare change to get the edge finishing stuff, so no finished edges on this. *sigh* The lettering, oh man, I haven't done calligraphy in almost as long as it's been since doing the leather. And it shows. lol All in all I am VERY happy with it. I was ready for my work to start back off at Jr. High summer day-camp project level, this is enough better to make me proud of it. lol The recipient almost cried when he saw it, and has since entered in competition (in my name) because he wanted it seen and recognized and for it to encourage others to get into this artform. Comments more than welcome. If constructive, they can't be as harsh on me as my GrandFather was when he was originally teaching me so many moons ago., so non-just-ego-stroking comments not only welcome but craved. ;-)© © Orchid Noir Creations

Latest Suit Of Armor - Imperial Sea Dragon
OrchidNoir replied to Prince's topic in Historical Reenactment
^ This! *wanders off wondering if she could hide in Prince's workshop somewhere for a month just watching the work happen..... -
Those are going to look incredible on the battlefield or in court. On the beveling, it looks to me like you are trying to go to fast, not allowing enough overlap from one impression to the other, hence the lines in it. Granted I'm just getting back into this after many years out. But I find that if I overlap my impressions by about half I don't get anywhere near as much of that to try to clean up. That being said, I would be more than proud to wear these or have one of my family wear them out to game in battle or at court. The Gorget has glorious form, I know people that have been trying to get results that nice out of leather armor contsruction for a couple of years.
