    Crocodile Ridge

Thanks for the replies, I had an idea of doing two 5 string flat braids and then joined them together with a double loop lace like I do a wallet edge with some plain cotton cord and it came out looking pretty good. I'll do one for real and try to learn the better way in the near future. I'm kind of busy at the moment with a bathroom.......LOL. Thanks again! Dano
  2. Hi, I'm going to dye some 1/8" round leather cord I bought in a natural color, but I'm not sure if I should deglaze it before I do. What is deglazing solution after all? Is it acetone? Thanks, Dano

    Crocodile Ridge

Hi, I've been thinking about trying a crocodile ridge braid like 10 string with a double backbone in two colors. Is it possible to keep the ridge all the same color? Thanks,Dano
  4. Thanks everybody for the replies, I tried a few things on my own and none of them looked that good so I ordered some orange dye. Dano
  5. I thought about that.....I have some red dye, tried it once but it turned out almost purple when it dried up. I'll give it another chance. Thanks for the reply! Dano
  6. Hi! I'm getting some round leather braid in tomorrow in the natural color and I'd like to dye it orange because I don't want to wait 6-9 weeks for them to dye it for me. I looked on the web and found orange dye but it was in a package of a lot of other colors I don't need at the moment. Does anybody have any suggestions on an alternative I could use? Like maybe wood stain or an acrylic? I'm going to use it to braid bracelets so I guess it's got to remain flexible. Oh.....I need orange like Harley orange. Thanks! Dano P.S. Pretty sure it's veggi-tanned.
  7. Thanks for posting those pics, now I'm anxious to see the new ones. The first ones looked great! Dano
  8. Can't hardly wait to see it! Thanks, Dano
  9. This sounded very interesting to me, can you post a picture of it? Thanks, Dano
  10. Great work! Very clean and your photography is excellent! Dano
  11. Very nice! I like those clasps, I have used them on a braided bracelet before and they worked well. Did you have any trouble getting the little clamps to bite into 8 oz? Did you have to skive the backside? Dano

    Overall Length

Hi everybody! What's a good rule of thumb for determining how long to cut the strands to get the overall length you want on the finished project? I thought I read somewhere one and a half times the OAL you want but that didn't work out too good. I don't want to waste too much material but then I hate to wind up trying to braid little nubs there at the end. Thanks! Dano

    Second Bracelet

Thank you all very much! I can't wait to make another one but I'm out of black lace. Anyone ever buy any lace from Springfield? I saw their webpage the other day and the prices were a lot lower than Tandy. Thanks again, Dano

    Second Bracelet

Thanks to everybody for the compliments and tips I've gotten so far here. You are all too kind! I started out making this piece as a necklace but I came up too short in length so I used it to make a bracelet instead. This gave me a chance to work on learning the Turkhead. I had so much trouble tying the knot around that little ball so I looked up in an old book I had and made the knot off the ball and then just tightening it up on the ball. Thanks again! Dano

    First Bracelet

Thank you all for the compliments! I like the clasps too but they aren't any good unless the braid is flat. I tried to use one on a round braid with a core and I had to skive away the backside until it got flat enough to fit in and I thought that looked cheesy. I've ordered some clasps for round braids and if they ever get here I'll see how they look. Thanks again, Dano

    First Bracelet

Hi everybody! I've been studying everybody's work and loved the bracelets I've seen so I decided to give it a try. I used Tandy's 1/8" black and whiskey kangaroo and also one of their new clasps they started carrying this year. It's a 10mm clasp and the braid fits right in with a little lube. Thanks for all the help! Dano
  17. Outstanding! Where did you get the clasps? Dano
  18. Thanks for the replies! I feel honored getting them from some of the best craftsmen I've come across here! I started over and used 1/8 Lace over a 3/8 flat core of the same 4 oz leather. That 3/32 was to small for me to learn on anyway. This time I tried a new technique, I pull upward/away from me as I tighten the strand and it seems to "scootch" the braid upward giving the coverage on the backside and still keep the braid tight. Hey, I get lucky sometimes...... Thanks again! Dano
  19. I'm trying to learn how to do an 8 strand round braid with a core. I'm using 3/32 Superior lace around a core of 4oz. leather 1/4 inch wide. I attached the lace 3 strands on top, 3 strand on back and 1 strand on each side. My first try looked great on the top side but when I turned it over to look at it there was a lot of daylight between the strands. I unbraided and started over this time putting some mink oil paste on the strands hoping I could pull them tighter but that didn't help much. Is the problem the size of the core? I have pulled the strands so tight I'm afraid I'll break them but I still have daylight. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Dano

    Hobbles

I think I got it all figured out now, your picture is just like something I wanted to make. A few questions......does that knot there where the loop ties into the 16 strand slide to tighten the loop? What knot made the ball? How do you figure the length needed for the overall length of the finished piece or do I just cut it long and then cut to length? Oh......when I get to the end of the 16 strand plait how do I finish up the back side? I took a guess and just went O1 Left O1 Right till the strands came to the same but it looks kind of sloppy. I guess that's going be covered over by the knot on the end?? Thanks again! Dano

    Hobbles

I got up this morning and looked at my project and with the tip from Aggiebraider it all came together!! Thank you soooo much! All I had to do was turn it over 1/4 turn and undo the first 4 strands and it looked right. I'd have never figured out the 1/4 turn thing! Thanks to everybody for helping me! Dano

    Hobbles

Thanks for the tip! I thought about what you said so I ran through it all over again and took a few pictures to show you what I have. The first picture is the end of the run, the second is the beginning after I pulled it out from under the clamp. They are in order still, I had started with the 4 strands in the center and then ran the rest of them behind and U2O2. The 3rd picture I laid them out flat on the table ad the 4th picture I did as you said and gave it a quarter turn. This is where I'm lost because you can see the 3 strands on both sides are under 1 strand. I can't for the life of me get it going from here, I tried to take the top right strand and go behind and the U2O2 and then the left but it looks like it's all wadded up on the backside. Thanks again! Dano
