  1. @Nuttish,

I have 80W Shenhui Laser that I imported from China. My Chinese laser has been fantastic. The machine works superbly, never broke down in the last 3 years and the support has always been fantastic. So based on the my experience, I will not agree with you that chinese lasers the not worth it. They are absolutely worth every penny and allow people to get fully functional laser for fraction of the cost of the Western Laser machines.

    @Dan 28

I would suggest to not buy the machine on Ebay but buy from the chinese manufacturers directly. These is extensive coverage ont this topic at Sawmill Creek online forum. Please check that before you decide to buy a laser.

  2. I have my own laser engraver and have used it extensively on leather. I first dye, apply finish and then engrave. See my pictures below of my work:

Just make sure that your friend understands that when you laser engrave leather it really stinks and you need to ventilate properly. The smell permeates everywhere so keep a few cans of Febreeze handy :)

  4. Not really sure anyone will have the time to give advice, but figured I'de ask.

I have been doing gun shows for the last 3 or so months and came to a sad realization.

I cannot make replacement inventory as fast I am selling it no matter how many hours a day I work.

As an example, I have been making 20 to 25 a week and I am still behind.

I could raise my prices, but in my mind that would be a huge step backward as I would rather increase production.

Everything I have done to increase my production has worked well. Such as a 12 ton press, oscillating belt sander, drum dyed leather, convection oven and such. But I find my biggest eater of production time is in the cutting out leather using patterns and edge work.

I am considering using clicker dies instead of hand cutting but feel the need to be able to make the die myself and eventually have one for every holster in my line up. Is this a stupid idea? I can get the flat metal bender and make room in the shop for it but cannot find the pre-sharpened steel ruler stock on line or locally.

I now use a pro edge dressing for my holsters, unless a customer requests otherwise, but applying it with a q-tip is time consuming and wasteful at best.

In a nutshell I guess I am asking if there is anyone here with a small, one man, production shop that has the time to correspond with me about the process and items I would need to do this.

I have currently had to shut down to custom orders to catch up with regular line and gun show sales so any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    George

I can suggest a crazy solution: Buy a laser cutter! I use it everday and its fantastic tool to have.

  5. This is fantastic. really good design and construction. Thank you very much for posting the pictures of the process.

Can you post some more pictures of the arrangement inside the bag. Also, what leather type/size have you used. Finally, you mentioned that the leather is tan in color but the photographs make the leather color look yellow. You may want to tweek the pictures to get the right color.

  6. My laser is from a Chinese company called Shenhui. Its an 80W machine with bed size of 900mm (36in) x 600mm(24in). Western made machines like Epilog/Trotec/ULS are very expensive and were out of reach for me. However, I am told that they are easier to use and more reliable. The Chinese machine I have is much less costly and I did not find them difficult to use or unreliable. Furthermore the customer service from the manufacturer in China is phenomenal.

If you are interested in lasers you should check out this laser forum (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/forumdisplay.php?8-Engravers-Forum).

  7. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you on this forum for the great help, support, advice that you have provided me to learn leather craft, answer questions, provide solutions to problems/issues and above all inspire with amazing work.

I feel very fortunate to be a part of this group.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year to all of you and your families.

  8. I would disagree with Tina on this one. EcoFlo Professional Dyes are not like acrylic paints and don't just sit on the surface of the leather. You are probably confusing them with Tandy's regular ECO FLO dyes.

I use Eco Flo Professional Dyes everyday on products that I make and I have not encountered the issue that OP listed in her message. You need to put your dye in several layers with a dauber or sponge.
