I was traveling in the part of Britain where there seemed to be nothing but mile upon mile of arable land, crops, ploughed fields and the rather sad linear mounds of uprooted hedgerows. This Journal cover was the result. -

I wondered if anyone had some knowledge of a product or method by which i could 'stiffen' leather? I am currently making 3-dimentional pieces of work. Similar to 'paper cuts' but using 2-3 mm hide. The problem I am having is that when I cut out the negative space round my design...(in this case, a carved bouquet of grasses)...the stems are thin and the grass heads are too heavy and flop forward and down. If I could paint on the reverse of the leather a product that would make it stiff it would solve the problem.....Any help gratefully received. Thanks Members.

I was very pleased to get this piece of work finished and wired up so as the light would shine from behind the 'grasses'. Sadly on its first outing to a prestigious Gallery, the piece 'went missing', for which I barely got an apology and no compensation. I must in future read the small print.....Still I am in the process of producing more and hopefully soon will have some new examples to upload. -

'Blossoms Crop' is the darkest of all my new colour palette backgrounds and I think the most successful. The deep Prussian blue helps high-lite the foreground design. -

I am trying to cut down the amount of hours spent carving/tooling on each Journal, yet hopefully keeping the design strong. This I hope will make the journals more affordable and salable! -

I am trying to use a varied colour palette in my new speculative journals. I have used the 'Horse Chestnut' and its fruit to depict Autumn. -

The first of some speculative pieces i am working on for some London stores. I have recently been using more gold leaf on my journals as a highlite.- 1 comment

'What Birds Dream'....This piece is the cover of a book I am writing of the same title. It explores the imaginary dream world of birds. A mix of Leather work and painting, Poetry and prose. The image is the Magpie sleeping under the light of a Bluebell. It is approximately 500mm x 300 mm and took 3 weeks to complete from design to final carving. -

This is a commissioned piece. Made for Prince Edward, Duke of Wessex. A lover and supporter of the Arts. It represents the animals one can find here, in the North of England. The inside depicts two flags, the first, the Dukes 'Standard', the second, the flag of 'Northumberland'. The Journal is approximately 500mm x 345mm and took a month to create from Design drawings to finished piece. -
