  1. I've found that Tandy's bone (plastic) folder is scratching my leather when I try to crease/fold. Is there something I can do to stop that from happening? Am I using it wrong? Where do you find top notch bone folders?
  2. I've been searching around the website and I can't find it, so if this is answered in a previous post, I apologize. Are there any parts of the cow that "perform" better on different projects? I know where the shoulders, sides, belly etc are, but I haven't found anything to tell me to lean towards this part when doing this. Such as bellies are best for tooling, shoulders are great for making wallets, bends are best for belts (these are probably all wrong, but that is an example of what kind of info I'm looking for.) I know leather from one cow might be a little bit better than another, and I know grade effects this. but as a general rule with all cows being #1s (only in my dreams) are all leather parts of same cow equal to its other parts?
  3. wow, i just bought a 1926 Singer 99-13 for $30 maybe i can repost it and only charge $17,000. That way they can get a 'DEAL'
  4. Lots of good info in there. Thanks
  5. This is a picture of my first leather project, a wall hanging type thing for my dad. I have taken a class since then, so im interested to see how I do on the next one. Tips? - Kevin
  6. what kind of lexol do you mix in to this? I searched for it, having never heard of it before, and i see there are a few different kinds, ex. Conditioner, phCleaner, etc....

  8. oh yea, don't forget we had the pleasure of seeing the world's largest horse there also. 19 hands, 2400lbs. radar i think his name was. simply astounding! didn't you get some pics of that marlon?
  9. Kevin. Libra. I enjoy long walks on the beach and .... o wait, wrong website I grew up in Huntsville, Tx but now reside in Houston after serving 8 years in the Marine Corps as a computer programmer. I build boat trailers for McClain now. I picked up leather in early December after learning that my real dad was an amazing leatherworker. The first thing I did was make him a semi-sheridan style Tandy craftaid that I put his initial in. I attended the Peter Main workshop with Marlon(Rawhide) and absolutely loved it. Leatherworkers are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
  10. Yea it was an awesome class. I had no idea I was going to learn that much! I was NOT disappointed in any way - other than the drive it took to get there It was great meeting you and your wife Marlon. I hope to see you all again. -Kevin p.s. ..... ..... you look meaner in your picture than you do in person hehe

Syd, Also look into leather from small tanneries in Germany, Peter Main mentioned leather from there was among his favorite. So, you know....if it's good enough for him... Might be cheaper than postage from Herman Oaks. Just a thought.
  12. thanks for your help everyone. i found a 99 on ebay for $30. it runs well, and looks pretty good. has tons of replacement parts. so we will see. i'll definitely check on the upgraded motor! i'll post some pics whenever i do an actual project thanks again, kevin
  13. First off, I would like to say hello to everyone here. I started leatherwork just before Christmas by stamping scraps so far. I love it! I have signed up for the Peter Main workshop in Ft Worth this weekend so I should get a lot of help also. Once I'm satisfied with my stamping ability, I want to sew small items, purses, wallets etc for family and friends. Pretty much nothing over 7oz. I also dont have the funds to buy an expensive machine such as the 3000. The local Tandy store mentioned that an old cast iron-type Singer might work. It doesn't do reverse, but I don't really need that. So I was looking around and found a 1926 Singer Model 99-13. Any thoughts on wether or not this will work for what I need? PS. I love the website - I'm still wading through the tons of knowledge that everyone has posted about. I thank you all!
