Spring Loaded Edge Guide Presser Feet / Compensating Guides
Anubis78 replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
RockyAussie, I need something that looks like the second foot or a compensating foot. I'm assuming that the second one is a guide foot. I'm looking to sew two straps, of different widths, together. I want to insure that my stitching is exact along the edge of the top (smaller width) strap. -
Spring Loaded Edge Guide Presser Feet / Compensating Guides

I hate to revive an old topic, but where do I find the compensating feet that would fit a Cobra Class 4 machine? The ones that I came across don't seem to work for a machine like mine. -

No, this one was for like $399 at my local Lowes. That's why if it were possible, it would be appealing. But now that I know that it will eat yo the leather, I won't even try it. Lol. I'll look up the hand cranked splitters on eBay...

Ah ok got it. I thought that it had a single blade inside of it. THANK GOD I reached out and asked... I have never used a planer and saw this while in Lowe's today. With the price of some of these machines, I keep an open mind to alternatives. Thank you guys for responding.

Has anyone ever tried using a wood planer, similar to the one pictured below, to split leather? This machine cuts up to .125 inches and I was thinking that a piece of 8-9oz leather could be attached to a thin metal plate (to raise the leather up to help achieve the desired thickness) with the use of repositionable leather tape and passed through the machine. This would be for larger pieces and would be less expensive than buying some of the machines I've been thinking about purchasing. I'm assuming it would be the same principle but thought I'd reach out and get opinions of others out there in the community who may have had the same idea. Thanks in advance!

CowboyBob, When I've used black thread on my Cobra Class4 machine, it appears to have a greyish look to it on items that I've worked on. My thoughts were that the lubricant may help prevent that. Plus I had seen a vendor actually spray a cone of thread once while altering a pair of leather jeans at an event (I believe the machine that he had was a juki) and I assumed that this was possibly a step that I needed to take to avoid this happening to my thread. I'm using nylon thread by the way.

have you done a search here? Take a look at this post http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/36137-leather-lifts-up-with-needle-need-help-at-wits-end/#comment-223429 You can find more like this. Posts by Wizcrafts and Gottaknow have a lot of good information on thread lubrication as well as many other sewing machine helps and problems. Tom Tom, I'll take a look at it this evening. Thank you for the feedback.

Hi, Has anyone used a Cricut, Cricut Air, Cricut Air 2 to cut detailed leather shapes/appliqués? I saw one at Michael's and read that it can cut leather. I'm assuming it can cut through thin garment leather if stabilized properly on the cutting surface. At it's price point, I wouldn't want to purchase it if it can't get the job done. Also if this has worked for you, can you import an adobe illustrator design that the machine can actually print? Is the software that comes along with it easy to use?

Hey everyone, I am looking into buying a Leatherpro AK-20 Leather Strap Cutting machine. The vendor says that the spacers that come with the machine are all metric but he can make spacers for me out of PVC pipe. What's appealing about this machine is that it has a 14" wide cutting capacity, which seems to be the widest that I could find without purchasing an extremely large machine. Has anyone had any experience with this machine? Has anyone ever created spacers out of PVC pipe that worked successfully with a strap cutting machine? Thanks in advance! -Cameron

Is it better to use open or closed cell foam for padding leather items? Closed cell would be more firm and wouldn't retain moisture. I'd assume that it would help in the prevention of molding. Open cell foam would be more breathable, which I'd assume would breakdown and or flatten over time plus allow for moisture absorption. I'd also assume that you would not want moisture absorption for something inside of leather because it could draw the oils out of the leather and cause it to dry out easily. I'd also assume that breathable foam could retain moisture and cause molding on the inside. Maybe I'm overthinking this. Doe anyone have any experience with this? Please advise.

What are your thoughts about putting nylon webbing inside of folded and sewn leather straps (say inside of 2-3oz leather). I would think that this could serve almost like a stabilizer for the strap in order for it to keep its shape. Are there any cons to this? Would there be any long term adverse effects of doing this? For example, if it is a lightweight leather, will the texture of the webbing eventually affect the look of the leather? Will nylon webbing breakdown due to chemicals in the glue if glued inside of the strap? Does anyone have any experience in doing this and if so, what were the results?

Good afternoon everyone. What is the best method for lubricating thread that won't damage the machine or the leather or over saturate the thread? I've seen a vendor spray silicone lubricant directly on the thread while it was on the cone when sewing leather garments. I've also seen in catalogs the thread lube box and thread pot. But which which is the better application of lubricant on the tread? Please advise.

Hi all! Any suggestions on where to find a custom embossing stamp for larger items? I've seen smaller stamps for something like a makers mark, but I'm looking for stamps that could be as large as 12" x 5" that has a custom shape. I would like to potentially place this in a hydraulic press to stamp/emboss a mass produced item.

I finally decided to get the OMAC Star3000. I should have purchased it last December as the price had gone up since my initial quote. I held out a bit because the vendor didn't have it in stock and it would arrive well past the time I needed it to mass produce leather straps for my suspenders. Once I get it going, I'll report back on how it's working out for me.

Any suggestions on a leather splitter machine, electric preferred, that has a small foot print? I'm a home based business and need to find machines with a small footprint for a small work space. I don't foresee anything having to be split that has a width over 10" at this phase of my business. Advise is greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone! I'm currently looking into getting custom cutting dies for leather in order to improve my efficiency in creating mass produced items. I initially looked at the Weaver Master Tool Mighty Wonder Hand Operated clicker, but with all the other machines that I'm having to purchase right now (ex: strap cutting machine and strap folding machine) I'm trying to keep my expenses low to stay within my budget. Something I'm considering is purchasing an hydraulic press and clicker press plates to cut down my cost. The Weaver 12 ton press is $285, but I found a few at harbor freight for $119 (possibly less with a coupon if I can find one). Now I always see mixed reviews about Harbor Freight tools ("you get what you pay for", "horrible", or "great product") so I'm looking for feedback from anyone who may have used the Harbor Freight press. The major difference I see in the presses is that the Weaver press (can be used on your work bench) doesn't take up as much space as the Harbor Freight (taller). Any feedback would be great! Also have any of you used the Weaver belt end dies or other cutting dies with a hydrolic press? Anything that I should be aware of or consider when getting custom dies made? Do the presses damage the dies at all? How long do the dies usually last?

Grommets and Snaps with longer depth or posts
Anubis78 replied to Anubis78's topic in Hardware and Accessories
I stand corrected. So today I received an email from UPS stating that I have a shipment due tomorrow from them. I went to their webpage and it appears to be updated, where last Friday night it still showed as not being processed. So I felt the need to at least put an update as I don't want to give a company a bad reputation if they followed through.- 9 replies

Grommets and Snaps with longer depth or posts
Anubis78 replied to Anubis78's topic in Hardware and Accessories
So Dot Fastners totally dropped the ball and screwed me on my order. I ordered last Saturday and received an email directly after my order stating that they would send notification when my order shipped. So I called today to follow up on my order and they hadn't processed it at all. I told the representative that I needed them shipped TODAY in order to hopefully receive them mid to late next week. She then goes through my order and tells me that they had not intended to process my order until January 11, 2017 (almost a month later) and then says that there are #1 grommets that they don't have in stock, same for the washers, implying that this is the reason why it had not processed/shipped. I asked her to remove those from the order so that they can ship the order TODAY as I need the snaps more urgently than the grommets. She also said that I was "lucky" that I called today as they were going to be closed after today until January and that they were updating my order so that it could be processed. Further that I should see the updated payment on my credit card account today. So tonight I go back to check on the status of the order and didn't receive an email stating that the order shipped. I then log on their web page and see that it's still PROCESSING! I check my credit card activity and not only are the first charges still pending but also the updated charges once the grommets were taken off. Had I known that they would have not processed my order this week, I would have looked for another company who could have filled my order for similar products in a more timely fashion. And it's rather disappointing as I had to call to find that part of my order was on backorder but also the fact that my efforts to get this shipment moving. I'd suggest that anyone who needs products from them should probably order 1-2 months in advance to avoid what I'm going though... this is ridiculous! I guess I wasn't so "lucky".- 9 replies

Thank you machinehead. I will look into them as well. I think I'll need a catalog from them as I'm finding their mobile version a bit challenging . Maybe easier to view from a computer.- 9 replies

Thank youtockyAussie. I'm definitely leaning towards the Omac machine at this point. The German machine that I referred to, Sieck, will cost me $900 in guides in addition to the price of the machine. The Omac can simply be adjusted to get the different folds. I have the quote from one Omac dealer and waiting on the other.
