Interesting question. To be onest, I've never really thought of this before, but now that I have, I guess I'll have to say I always have the grain pattern going down. I don't have a motive for this really, it's just how I lay out my patterns on the skin I'm working with. Regards, Chris

Hey all, here is a pic of my latest sheath and most recent attempt at carving. The design is based on a silhouette of a tree and carries onto the back but I forgot to take pics of that.The knife is a Buck Diamondback. -Chris

Hello all, I've been scarce around here lately after Ihad my harddrive crash but I figured it was time again to contribute. This is my most recent completed project and it was myfirst time lining a sheath, doing an inlay and lacing an edge. The inlay is rattle snake. I just switched over to that stuff as well. Bought a big can of it from Canadian Tire and figured I'd give it a go. It seems to work well enough but I've only used it for 1 project so far. Glad to hear I didn't shoot myself in the foot on buying it. Cheers. -Chris

Thanks all. I went with a coffin shape because the knife itself has such a sharp point and I wanted a bit of protection when insertng the knife as well as to help guide it in. I toyed with a few different shapes for the openning of the sheath but I liked the coffin look. After surfing this forum I'm going to definately broading my carving attempts since I've found this place to be a wealth of information. The funny thing about the web is that I initialy spent over an hour with a fine tipped brush dyeing all the raised portions black and I was going to do the inside of the web blue. But just as I was dying the edges a stray bead of dye ran into the web spoiling my plan. I couldn't help but leaugh. Thanks again forthe feedback. -Chris

Hey all. Thought I'd post a pic of my latest completion. It's a sheath I made for a friend who wanted a leather sheath to carry his Ronin horizontally on the small of his back. He asked if I could leave as much of the finger groove exposed as possible and that it have no retention strap. So, to aid with retention I wet molded the opening of the sheath to slightly grip a portion of he finger groove and sandwiched 5 rare earth magnets in the back to help secure the blade. It goes in edge up to be drawn easier inserting the tip of the thumb into the exposed groove. Thanks for looking. I'm still new so pointers and suggestions are always welcome. -Chris

Hello all, I would like to first say that this seems like a great forum. I joined a few days ago and have since learned a fair bit. Second, I' like to introduce myself. My name is Chris and I'm from Ontario Canada. I have always been a knife user/collector but several months ago I was given some basic instruction and directed to Tandy leather by some other knife folk when I needed a sheath for my tomahawk. I was pretty much hooked after that and I'm always open to learning new tips,tricks and techniques. I'm also always open to finding new outlets to have my work critiqued especially by people why really know their stuff.
