Doubts about leather for boots
Kovant replied to Kovant's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
Anyone can help me, please? Thanks -
Hi I want to begin to make handwelted boots and I have some doubts. I will be pleased if someone could help me. I'm gonna use insole + welted + midsole + comando rubber sole. I use veg tan cowhide for bags, briefcases, etc, and I don't know if I can use the same leather (with other oz) for the insole, welted and midsole or if I have to buy some special leather for it. I'm doubting too if the leather I usually use it's ok for the stiffeners. Thank you very much!

Hi I would like to know if someone knows if the bars of this handbag are made of wood or are they made of another material. I think that they are made of wood but I’m not sure because I guess wood bars could bent... Could someone help me? Thanks

I would like to make another question, Gary. I’m gonna buy in abbeyengland dee rings, buckles and trigger hooks, all of them to use with the brass locks. I have a doubt: when I look at the pictures (buckles...) it looks like if the “colour” of the brass is not the same as the colour of the locks (more yellow, more orange...) Do you know if this is because of the way the photos were taken or is it that the “colour“ of the brass is really different? Thank you very much.

Thank you very much. I would like to know how do you have to put the escutcheon (tool?) cos I’ve never used them. Thanks

Hi I want to buy some locks (English round lock from abbeyengland) I think the locks come with escutcheons pins (if I’m wrong please let me know) and I want to know if someone knows some tool to put the escutcheons pins on the right way. Thanks

Hi Anyone has the Crimson pricking iron? What do you think about it? I was thinking to buy the blanchard ones but the Crimson looks nice. Maybe a little big holes? http://www.crimsonhides.com/craft-tools.html Thanks

Thanks! I know it, and I do it, but I can't to hold the leather so the stitching line is not really good.

Thanks Alpha2! I know it, but I want to do it by hand.

Hi I wont to do bags with lap points (similars to the photo), I'm trying to do them but it's very difficult to stitch them because I don't know how to hold the leather when I've done the first "stitching line". I've been looking for some video for a long time but I've haven't found what I'm looking for. Anyone knows how can I do this? Thank you very much.

Isn't it very difficult to work with the wheel above of all to get it straight? thanks

Thank you very much!!! The Crimson chisels look nice, but I think maybe they make too wide holes...and I've just found few opinions of it. The Amy Roke looks nice too, but I have to wait 2 month for the production and the shipping to Spain (too much time for me) The Wuta are really cheaper and look nice, but just a few opinions again... I've been having a look at the Osborne too, but it makes too wide holes. I'm not sure about the Blanchard ones, but I think that they are the ones that make smaller holes. Thanks

Thanks Mattsbagger!!! Someone else please?

Hi I'm thinking to buy a #7 or #8 vergez blanchard pricking iron to make handbags and belts with vachetta leather (cowhide). I would like to know the "perfect" size of thread for the blanchard (au chinois?, tiger?) I would like to know too if the stitch will be better than the stitch of the picture (chisel 2mm + thread 0,6mm) Thanks (and sorry for my bad english)

Hi, I´ve been reading this forum for several weeks, I really like it and have learned lots of things. I would like to make you a question, if you can help me (sorry for mi english, I´m from Spain). I´m making vachetta leather (veg tan cowhide) handbags for men and women, spirit tanned and natural leather, and I would like to do the most natural possible finish. Would it be enough to use neatsfoot + beeswax? I know it´s not a finish, but the thing is that I want to know if it discolours/fades. I´ve also tried tan kote and i don´t like it at all because it always leaves stripes. I wouldn´t like to use resolene and others if it´s possible, because after using them you cant apply oils, etc. You can see an example of one of the bags in the photo attached. Thank you very much
