Where to buy holster/magazine patterns?
MarkCdub replied to MarkCdub's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Thanks everyone. I did just complete my first double magazine pouch. I made it for a leatherman and surefire, I wet formed it and it is currently drying overnight. Ill get some pictures up tommorow. I think the next one I need to make the flashlight pocket slightly wider. I enjoy drawing out the patterns. I used the JLS pattern for a double stack glock magazine and extended the pattern/design to fit my needs. I know from nylon magazing pouches, that a leatherman or a surefire flashlight fit nicely in a double stacked magazing pouch. Love every chance I get to make something different, I learn something new and get to make something I like. -
Wow, bunch of great information. Thank you. Does diluting the dye make it lighter and therefore give you more time/control to get the desired color and coverage?
-
I saw a video where the guy had a big tub and just dipped the leather into it. That came out clean, but he also had a gallon jug of dye. I suppose I need to let it dry a little while. Its just a good thing that the part thst is streaked will not be visible.
-
Im using fiebings pro dye's, and I cant seem to get a finish that doesn't look streaky. I can tell the streaks are where I reload the dauber and I overlap a strip of what I have already done. Do I need to use a circular pattern when applying dye?

Where to buy holster/magazine patterns?
MarkCdub replied to MarkCdub's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Chief, I understand quality over quantity. That is the allure of this hobby for me. I have just been trying to make things that interest me and screen shotting the crap out of Pinterest for cool insperation. I have been making my own patterns, but I have been falling short on compensating for item thickness. All in due time... -
Where to buy holster/magazine patterns?

I appreciate it, I know my leather is not the best (tandy sale shoulder...). I bought it because it was cheap and I wanted to make a tool pouch for work, so not a huge investment and plenty to make mistakes/learn on. I did just order how to make holsters last night and I will watch your suggested videos this evening. -
I see all these amazing holsters online, where are some good places I can buy patterns? I have attempted to make my own with little success, and I hate wasting leather. I feel like having one pattern and making one successful holster would help me "figure it out". I watch all these YouTube videos where they go from raw leather to wet formed holster in an hour and I'd like to get to that point one day.

Tool pouch, saddle stitch and Chicago screws
MarkCdub replied to MarkCdub's topic in How Do I Do That?
Spunds good. I never thought about lining up the screw slots. -
I've been looking at a bunch of notebook covers for my "rite in the rain" notebook. I have decided on what features I want and my design. What would be the best weight veg tanned leather in your opinion/experience?

Cowboy boots make GREAT holsters!
MarkCdub replied to MoRoadglide11's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
This is great! What a way to reuse something that is destined to the scrap bin. I could see these being a great tribute to someones father/grandfather, as a way of having them with you. -
I'm making a tool pouch to streamline my work tools into a more compact and secure pouch. I want to use Chicago screws for aesthetics. I know the saddle stitch will be strong enough for the tools I carry. How do I incorporate the screws into my design? Should I start and stop the stitching at the screw points, or should I just stitch around the (inner/outer?) circumference of the screw? Im thinking stitching around the inner circumference would look really nice, and ensure that even if the screw ever fell out the stitch and glue would hold the pouch together. Anyway, any thoughts or pictures are appreciated.

What thickness of leather did you use? -
Pancake sheath design for Gerber multi-tool question
MarkCdub replied to MarkCdub's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thanks for the pointers. I finally finished my pattern, but I am going to wait until I get the flashlight I want. I will make a sheath that holds both similar to how Brian77 constructed his. One other question, what weight leather are y'all using? -
I am drawing my pattern in a pancake style and I want to have it flat in the back and pocket in the front for wet molding. How do I compensate/measure for the thickness of the multitool, and the thickness of the leather to fit the multitool and still be a tight fit?
-
I appreciate the kind critiques. I have watched untold stitching videos on YouTube. I enjoyed making this and I'm working on a better pattern now. I'll incorporate the welt and see if I can get it to fit nice and snug.
-
Thanks for the constructive criticism. I honestly just looked at sheaths of a similar design through google and pinterest and found many of this style. I did not intend to wear it, so much as it was a small available knife to practice on. As for welting, I did not want to make this sheath that thick. I also did not think about it when I started making it.
-
Well, even though it is too small for the blade... It is my first project and I learned a ton from it! I marked my stitching lines at the blades edge, thinking it would stretch. This is 7/8 ounce and even after soaking it in warm water it didnt stretch enough to get the knife in. Also I need to get me a belt slot punch since I plan on doing a lot of holster. Let me know what yall think.

Would it be possible to wrap it like a stearing wheel? The stitches could be oriented towards the bottom and you could just leave gaps where the handrail attaches to the wall.
-
Thanks John, I have noticed a slight amount of loosening on my mass produced tool pouch, but nothing too extreme. I just did not want to go through the hastle of form fitting to fit my tools if they were just going to end up flopping around like they do right now.

Hey everyone, I am just starting out and am designing a tool pouch for my work tools. I carry them in a pouch that hangs from my belt. The pouch I have is too bulky and cause my tools to get hung up on latter cages and when squeezing through tight spots. One thing I have noticed is that when new, my tools fit snuggly in the pouch but after a few months they have become loose. My question is, do y'all have any advice on how to take that stretch into consideration when making a "form fitted" pouch? Or should I just design each slot with a strap and snap around the top similar to many fixed blade knife sheaths?
