  4. Hello SmithS: The early 500's serial number is very early. Probably mid to late 1920's. The build cards I have begin about 5-years after your saddle was built. I will look through Porter Catalog No. 15, to see what I might come up with. Best regards, BNP

  9. My Grandfather - Fred S. Porter, Sr. - wrote in Catalog Number 34 for the Summer and Fall of 1948: "We use leather of the finest tannage and quality, the best hardware. Our saddle makers are master craftsmen who take pleasure in making your saddles which are built with seats that are easy riding and comfortable...saddles constructed to give years of service. When you combine the above into a saddle, you have the best." To this day, Porter saddles continue to work. Many are held in private collections, while others are on display in western museums throughout the country. Should you happen to have a Porter saddle in your care and are interested in knowing its original history, let us know. We have the original build cards for over 30,000 Porter saddles. I've included an examples of build cards and as you can see, it includes information that gives provenance to its authenticity. The serial number is found on the (near side) stamped on the rear skirt, under the rear jockey. BNP

  12. Dear Lisa: My son has located the build card for your Porter saddle (16080). I've attached a photo of the card, authenticating your saddle. BNP
  13. Dear rgraham1961: My son has located the build card for your Porter saddle (24407). I have attached a photo which authenticates the saddle. BNP
  14. Twowilldo: No. 16080 was built 1940. Most closely resembles the “Porter 1130”. Made with the full checker stamp, the price would have been $84.00, or $1,500 in 2019. I’ll ask my son to pull the card. BNP
  15. Porter saddles with serial numbers in the 24189-24500 range were built in 1946. BNP
  16. Actually my friend, all of the records are in original card-form. I've just got to figure out the best way to preserve them using one of the options you mention. I've attached photos for your interest. BNP

  19. My great grandfather was N. Porter. I have the records on 36,000+ Porter saddles from the early 1930's-1960's. The serial number is key to locating the card (containing all of the history) for this saddle.
  20. My great grandfather was N. Porter. My grandfather kept individual records for more than 36,000 Porter saddles ever made. I have those saddle records. Perhaps you might locate the serial number. The serial number is found on the (near-side) stamped on the rear skirt, under the rear jockey.
