  1. Hey All Is it possible to put a laser guide on the Cobra Class 4 sewing machine? I have one and I'd love to have the laser guide to help me ensure I'm lining things up straight.
  2. Break Out the dark colour dye. All fixed.
  3. Hey All I was putting together an order on Tandy Leather and I came across an "Edge Dying Machine". Here is the link to the machine: Edge Dying Machine I can't find any information on it online. Not even a single video. It was half-price so I purchased it on an impulse. A fool and his money right... Anyone know anything about this?
  4. Hey All After a lot of research, I have narrowed my sewing machine search down to the Flat Bed TechSew 1660 PRO or the Cylinder TechSew 2700 PRO. Here are the specs of the 2700 Pro: 2700 Pro Here are the specs of the 1660 Pro: 1660 Pro I currently have a Cobra Class 4 machine, so these machines are intended to sew leather under 4-5oz when making bags, wallets, etc. My big issues is whether I would be better served with a full flat bed machine or if the flat bed attachment would be just as good on the Cylinder machine. Are there any real drawbacks to using a flat deck attachment on a cylinder machine? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All
  5. Hey All I tried sewing a Seal Fur pelt on my Cobra Class 4 tonight and while it went "ok", it was very very hard to get a nice straight line. I see many people use a machine designed to handle Fur. I've been watching videos and they seem completely different than traditional machines. Has anyone ever tried a fur sewing machine and, if so, do they work much better than a normal walking foot machine like the Cobra Class 4?
  6. Hey All I was wandering around bay and I noticed there is a cutting machine with a set of folding/creasing rolls on the other side of the machine. They look like they could be used to emboss leather, if you could get embossing wheels to fit on them. I've attached a Picture of the machine to this post. Seems to be a pretty popular machine as there TechSew and others also sell the same unit. Does anyone know anything about this machine? If it both cuts and embosses, that would be amazing! Thanks All
  7. Hey All I have been doing extensive research on Light/Medium duty sewing machines to handle the smaller leather my Cobra Class 4 doesn't like. I have pretty much decided to go with the TechSew 611 Pro and modify it with a Sailrite delicate/leather foot and feed dog. This isn't the ideal machine for me, but I have very limited space in my leather working room so I can't accommodate a large industrial stand/table. After looking at the room, I realize that I do have a large closet that measures 39"x23". I could easily remove the closet door and put an LED light on the ceiling to make it a great place for a proper industrial sewing machine. My problem is however, the only smaller sewing machine table/stands seem to be at least 46" wide. Does anyone know a manufacturer who sells proper industrial walking foot machines with smaller tables? The only one I can find is from Tandy Leather and it seems way overpriced for the sewing machine and table.
  8. Hey All Has anyone on here upgraded their Cobra Class 3 or 4 with a Needle Positioning System? I love my Class 4, but an NPS system would be very convenient. That being said I'm not even sure if it is doable or how difficult it would be. I see Cobra offers the King Cobra with this system, but that's way too big for my little leather workshop. Any insight would be appreciated.
  9. I was actually thinking about buying the Leather/Delicate Foot from Sailrite to swap onto the TechSew 611 Pro. From what I've read they should fit, and Sailrite's Leather/Delicate foot seems to work really well. In the meantime however, I think I can get the TechSew foot to work. I am a knife and pen maker in my spare time and have access to a lot of metal working tools. (My own garage is as equipped as most mid-scale machine shops.) I am actually interested in getting a few feet and changing their shape/profile/texture on my milling machine to see what works best. When I do, I'll post my experiments here. Thanks again for your help. Sewing machines are new to me but this place is a wealth of knowledge!
  10. Thanks for the rundown! I am leaning towards the TechSew as a) I've used their machines before and they seem well made; and b) The 611 Pro comes with some nice upgrades like the heavy wheel with hand crank. (A big plus for a noob like me as it allows me to go very very slow.) When you say "smooth out the presser foot" do you mean sand/polish it to a smooth finish?
  11. Hey All I am looking for a Portable (non table mounted) sewing machine that can handle light to light-medium duty tasks such as wallets, handbags, etc. (Mainly 2-4oz Leather maximum.) I already have a Cobra Class 4 for heavier tasks, and I want something that is light enough to store out of the way when I'm not using it. (My leather room is small and can't fit another large pedestal mounted unit.) I've looked at the TechSew 611 Pro Portable Walking Foot Machine and it seems like a nice unit. (Plus it is available in Canada which is a big plus.) Here is a link to the TechSew 611 Pro: https://www.techsew.com/machinery/industrial-sewing-machines/portable-walking-foot/techsew-611-pro-portable-walking-foot-straight-stitch-zigzag-sewing-machine.html Does anyone have any experience with the TechSew 611 Pro? Alternatively, what machines do you recommend?
  12. Hey All I have tried a few different ways, but how does everyone keep their leather clamps from damaging or denting their leather? I normally make knife sheaths which require an initial glue-up before stitching. I've tried multiple different types of clamps, but they all seem to leave small indents in the finished sheath. I've tried using scrap leather and felt as a buffer, but to no avail... Anyone have a secret they are willing to share?
  13. Hey All I am looking for a Sewing Machine to compliment my Cobra Class 4. While I love the Cobra, I need something to sew lighter leather for wallets, bags, etc. The TechSew 1660 Pro is on sale now and I can get it within Canada so shipping is cheap and there will be no tariffs. I see the Pro has the flip down guide, (which I love on my Cobra) and needle position sensor, both of which are big bonuses for me. Does anyone know anything about these machines? Any input at all would be appreciated.
  14. I'm about 90 minutes outside St. John's. Good to see another MUN man here!
  15. Hey All I took delivery of a new Cobra Class 4 Machine about a month ago and I honestly can't believe that I waited so long to get a proper sewing machine for Knife Sheaths. (I make 30-50 per year and this machine has honestly changed how I view leather working.) I am now thinking about investing in a machine to sew thin leather for wallets or purses. (2-4oz maximum with 46 thread.) I only do a couple of these per year, but I'd like to start doing them by machine. I don't want to mess with my Cobra Class 4 settings as 95% of my work is Knife Sheaths and right now it is sewing those amazingly well. (Seriously, I cant believe how well Cobra set this machine up before sending it to me.) I don't want to spend a bunch as my new Cobra with options, a Cobra Burnisher and shipping just set me back $7K here in Canada. I can get a new-in-box Janome HD3000 Black Edition for $300 here from a friend, but I'm not sure it will stitch leather. Used really isn't an option where I live as it is very remote and there is nothing on the used market. Will the HD3000 work? If not, what are my best cost effective options.
  16. Hey I lowered it today using the jack technique. Lowered perfectly smoothly and is now the perfect height. Can't wait to get home tonight to start trying to use it!
  17. Sounds like I will need a second set of hands. Thanks for letting me know it can be done.
  18. Hey All I am setting up my new Cobra Class 4 Premium Package and the overall height is a bit high. It looks like you can lower the stand by loosening the bolts in the stand column. Is this possible? If so, anything I should be careful of? (Other than disconnecting the shaft to the servo motor before starting.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  19. Hey all I have been setting my snaps manually with a hammer and I've decided it's time to buy a press and dies. I'd like to be able to set leather snaps, rivets and punch holes with it. I don't have room for a kick press, so looks like I'm stuck with a bench mounted hand or electric press. I don't mind spending a bit extra for a good press I've read countless forum posts, but I seem to keep getting more and more confused. Any help is appreciated Bottom line is, what's the best press?
