Hello! I just got a Singer 31-15. The man who used it before me used it very well and it is in great condition! I changed out the belt and everything runs smoothly except for one thing. The straight stitches come out slightly slanted all uniformly. They're not all straight but in a weird diagonal line and I'm not sure why. It doesn't matter what fabric I use it always comes out this way. Does anyone know how I can fix this? The image I attached shows the problem. I'm using a #69 nylon thread with a 100/16 leather needle on some thin leather. Thank you!

hi all, The threads I've read so far are super informative and interesting, but I haven't yet found an answer to my question. I've had a Singer 31-15 for several years and sew on it constantly (not leather really, just fabric), and love the stitch quality and how perfect it looks. I would like to do more straight line quilting on it, and think a walking foot might help with feeding the fabric through a little more perfectly, but have only found this resource for an adapted even feed foot for it: http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachineshop/walkingfootmod/walkingfootmod.html Unfortunately I read that this person has since passed away, but my husband helped make the adaptation to a singer even feed foot for me. I'm scared to try it because I don't want to throw off the timing or anything on my machine, and the reason I'm nervous is because in the article and photo it shows a "professional" even feed foot and I just bought the singer even feed foot I found at Joanns. Does anyone know if the professional one might be specifically made for industrial type machines? I tried searching for Professional even feed feet and couldn't find any that said that on them... thanks for any advice! Ellene

I have a Singer 31-15. Had it sewing beautifully with #92 thread. Switched to #69 & the bobbin thread is looping BADLY. I noticed that after a couple of stitches, the thread is jumping out of the tension discs. I've tried adjusting the tension on the discs, thread still jumps out. It seems as if it needs more tension before the discs to keep it between the discs. I appreciate any suggestions you experienced folk have, however, I'm not a sewing machine repair person, or by any standard an expert, so simple answers will be the most helpful. I'm not up on the technical terminology. Thanks!

So i bought this old machine, ild cobblers hammer, overstitch wheel and 3 bevelers for 200$ (bevelers arent too great, but after sharpening they may be good to go. Thats a seperate thread) anyway it seemed pretty good. Machine came with a treadle base, not the original but it worked ok. It also came with a motor 1/4 the size the machine needed, but i wasnjust interested in it working mechanically. Anyway, since i've never restored a machine i gave it to a guy who oiled it up, messed with the tension, fixed up the motor to get it in working order and just checked it over. (80$) he also threw in 100 leather needles whoch was awesome. not really a full servicing but what can you do. I was looking to do a bit myself and i started running into the problem of thread snapping a lot. The thread i use is original that came from the drawers of the machine. At first i thought it was just too big, so i put in some tiny stuff from a singer 15-91. That snapped almost instantly. I messed with the tension quite a bit and it can sew pretty well, but i really want to get it to work with the treadle. The tension disks are not opening at all, or at least to the eye. I checked inside and the pin seems to not be in existence as well, so thats probably been worn down. It may just be a matter of replacing the tension unit. If so let me know if its something a newbie could do reasonably easily. I plan on downloading the manuals this weekend and taking a closer look. My ideal setup would be getting it to work with the treadle. Any ideas on improving that usage? Probably going to get a rubber belt since the leather one is slipping quite a bit. Right now im putting in 2 layers of 6-7 ounce veg and oil tanned leather and its handling it pretty well with just turning the wheel. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VboOT5FwWgQRcsynLtgT7SOKo1Gx0Qnc/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fknjVXb9fJx94O8kmUFCu--ylvoeBtUD/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nx50fNK8_cO7n2cLZcOsXr4pG3EVyMJP/view?usp=drivesdk

Hello all, I have searched the web and in most cases I am pointed to this site. so I have joined because I have gotten more information from the members hear than anywhere else, Thank you for that. Recently i was given a beast of a machine the Singer 31-15 and I am now going through the process of cleaning and removing all the gunk Needless to say it has become a part of the mudroom, i have oiled and used PB Blaster and lots of patience and little by little all is coming loose, and moving nicely. Tthe problem I am having is with the balance wheel, !s there a trick to removing the balance wheel on the singer 31-15 sewing machine? I have removed the 2 set screws from the collar of the wheel, and the set screw from the rear of the arm, I have also removed the arm shaft screw, from the back end of the wheel however it does not come off. Can someone tell me what I am missing please help. There is a link to pinterest with pics of the above screws removed. https://www.pinterest.com/Huntressangel/sewing-machines-vintage/
