Well, again, I hope I am doing this right. I checked the search feature and didn't find anything so here is my question...please do not shoot me if it has been asked 1000 times.

What thickness or ounce of leather works best for the tops of the custom seats and what do you guys use for the sides? Obviously if it is exotic there will be some exceptions but even then I suppose one glues them up over a heaver full grain leather.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I usually use 5-6 oz. on top. Sometimes 6-7 oz. 3-4 oz. on the sides. All vegetable tanned leather. Hope this helps ya out.

Since I dry assemble I use the same weight leather front and back....I would say that 6 oz is an absolute minimum for the way I build. I actually prefer Tandy's 7 to 8oz. 9051-01 trimmed double shoulders if I can choose it myself. Which I now can since we have a Cincinnati store with a great manager. Thanks to Michael....!

I usually use 8-10oz. I like Hermann Oak leather, I used to get Tandy hides but it seems their quality has slipped in the last 2-3 years.

Hi Crow,

1oz = 1/64 inch = .015625 inch = 0.396875 millimeters.

At least over here in the US.
