Thank all y'all for the good advice.  I am planning on sewing gun belts on this machine.  I usually use 2~3 oz and sew two layers together for durability.  Same for my holsters I make.  I know it will push it to its limits, but until my kids get out of college this is all I can afford.  I found a 55mm pulley on amazon that should fit the motor, and I ordered a larger balance wheel from sailrite.  Turns out the motor I bought has a tapered shaft so I had to search high and low to find a pulley with a tapered shaft.  Yeah, I know, by the time I finsihed modifying this machine I might have spent enough money for a better machine from the beginning, but what is the fun in that?

Anyway,  I am thinking about getting that big 10" diameter wheel to put on the machine drive shaft.  I would have a 4 to 1 speed reduction then.  with the min speed on the motor control being 200 rpms, that would give me 50rpms and I could really get some torque out of that baby!

Here is the link to the 55mm pulley I bought in case anybody else needs it.  The taper on my motor starts at about 11mm and necks down to about 9mm according to my calipers:

Thanks for the link to the tapered-shaft pulley. Glad to see they are finally making these smaller than 65 and 75mm.

friquant. Like a frequent, piquant flyer.
