Puritan Presser Foot and parts

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I picked an old puritan high post up and it seems to be sewing nicely (well... after adjusting timing and replacing the incredibly worn cast off and brace...). I'm just looking for a few parts I'd like to have backups or variations on, mostly the presser foot, as mine is awfully chewed up. It looks like the presser foot bar measures 7/16" in diameter, anyone know of another sewing machine whose feet might be compatible?  Ditto for the thread tension assembly.  Thanks!

I'd also love a source for size 0 (140) 1143 lg (HN 84/65) needles.  Groz has them, but a pack of 100 would cost as much as the sewing machine did....

I can't really help you but I will offer a huge "Thank You!" for posting the picture.  I love pictures of the old machines!

FWIW,

Jim

Thanks, honestly sometimes I browse this forum just to check out the cool old sewing machines.

Thanks, I actually have an order in with them, but haven't received the invoice yet (been a couple weeks). I probably need to give them a call again.

And just as an fyi, campball randall CHS awls have the same dimensions as the puritan oval awls- just with a chisel point, and work just fine in these machines.

That's good to know! It causes me to wonder if Union Lockstitch awls and needles will work in a Puritan.

I actually had the same thought, and grabbed a pack of union lock stitch needles (1143 A, HN 84/63) when I bought my awls.

Left is the UL, right is the puritan.  I don't think height difference would matter, the difference appears to be contained to the space above the barb.  I suppose it might require adjusting the looper timing a smidge.

The bigger issue is the shank length. As my machine is timed, the longer shank would be driven into the cast off and brace. I'm not familiar enough with the timing mechanism to say if this can be compensated for.

But regardless the UL isn't a direct swap for the puritan.
