rgerbitz Report post Posted February 13, 2008 I have been asked to make a bosal of roo or latigo that is very supple yet strong. (half in to 5/16 diameter) I would like some help trying to figure out what would be best to use for a core (twisted rawhide, braided rawhide, or rawhide string, or whatever else I am unaware of)? Which is the better material, roo or latigo? I would also like to know where to find some good roo, seidel gave me one place, and if I should get colored hide or stain it the color desired? If I should stain how do I do that? He wants his bosal to be a shade or two darker than the average bay horse. If latigo is best where is the best place to get it? I have asked alot and I prethank anyone who spends the time to help, Thank You Rob Gerbitz
KAW Report post Posted February 13, 2008 If you want it really soft I would take one string of rawhide rounded then braid over it with leather till you get your desired core size As for which is better, it depends on how hard your going to use it,(hard use go with the latigo and fewer strings, less use go roo with finer strings). I get alittle roo once in awhile from Sheridan leather outfitters. tell them what you want and they will send you samples they also have latigo. Their # is 1 888 803 3030 This is just one way to go about it, Hope it helps

wantmorelandandcattle Report post Posted February 14, 2008 This is where I get some roo hide from. http://www.ubraidit.com/ They're pretty nice people and they return phone calls, which is a plus! I've been pleased with what I have purchase so far. Here are some more places I have found that sell roo hide. I've never puchased anything from any of them. Your on your own there. There are a couple of people that sell it on ebay, just use some good judgment there, some of those hides are for gloves and garmets and they're awful to braid. For latigo, there are tons of places that sell it. http://members.ozemail.com.au/~welmat/rooskin.htm http://www.montanaleather.com/ http://davidmorgan.com/ http://www.eleatherworks.com/home.php http://www.murphywhips.com/index.html
skinner Report post Posted February 20, 2008 Lots of places to get it as you now know. One thing I found is to get veg tanned roo. It is very firm and cuts really nice. Also keep in mind if you oil or put a dressing on it, it darkens the color quite a bit. Good luck.Skinner
