Elna Supermatic straight stitch 722010

Recommended Posts

I see a vintage Elna on Facebook for a good deal but wondering if it will work for my leather hobby. I mostly like and use hand saddle stitch for my projects but the odd thing crosses my path like this chair I am now redoing and the hand stitching is going to be too much work. Some of my bike saddles i do are 7 oz leather or a bit heavier shown in the photo......thanks in advance wayne bergman.

You need to at least give the model number so we know which one you're talking about, but in general if it's a domestic machine (even if they say something like "heavy duty") then it's unlikely to be suitable for sewing leather.

No. That is a nice and respected vintage machine - but still just too light duty for what you want to do. My wife owns one, and it is well designed and manufactured. I suggest spending some time reading the threads and posts on here, particularly Wizcrafts post in this forum on the type of machines suited to sewing leather.

I'm going to kind of pile on to @Wyowally's answer. I have one of those great old Supermatics. You could probably manage some light upholstery work if you limit it to #69 thread. I wouldn't want to punch much leather with it, though.
