I have a customer ordering a new handle for an instrument case. He requested having a marble that was removed from the instrument inset in the handle. It looks to be a standard round marble. Anybody have ideas on how this might be accomplished?

This is a WAG but I would talk to my jeweler and see if he could saw the marble in half ( so there is a flat side) .  Then something like this might could be made to work. Good Luck !!!!!!

I would not have it cut. That will ruin the point of it. The leather wrapping the compass in the photo above can be extended to hold the marble

make and put it in the center of a round handle, punch three holes slightly smaller than the marble ( top and sides) so the marble can be seen and you can stitch the bottom side closed

you may have to skive around the holes so the edges around the marble are thinner and can form around it.

@Fraulein This might help.... might at least give you some ideas if you are dealing with a flat handle .

you might just want to do it on a small piece and treat it like a luggage tag ?

Did this come from the Art of Hand Sewing Leather or another Stohlman book?  It looks like something I need to have.

Thank you all for the advice!! In the end the customer cheaped out on me and decided the marble inset wouldn't be worth any extra cost lol

Thank you all so much for the replies though, I learned a lot that I might be able to use in the future!

I would not cut it. The glow will go. The inner reflections might not be seen kind of like the inner reflections of a faceted stone.

Consider making a bezel. I did that for coins.i 3d printed the bezel.
