Contributing Member Regis Posted December 19, 2007 Contributing Member Report Posted December 19, 2007 Bought a nice soft brown leather jacket for my wife at a fairly nice ladies store. They wrapped and boxed the other items and gave me a box & wrapping for the leather jacket. They said they were instructed by the maker not to wrap until one day before giving as a gift because the leather would dry out too much and harm the leather. After thinking about it a little, it made some sense. Their normal wrapping is to fold item in tissue paper, then box, and wrap. I guess the tissue could suck the moisture out of the leather if left for long time but, would a week or two be harmful? Not complaining 'cuz, at least they care enough to point out that excess drying leather could be bad. Any thoughts? Quote
Moderator Johanna Posted December 19, 2007 Moderator Report Posted December 19, 2007 Another example of the myth and mystique of leather. A coat isn't going to dry out from being wrapped in a box for a week or two, if the leather was properly tanned to begin with. There is so much general leather misinformation out there, you can't blame the store for believing that silliness either. Wait until the coat is in the closet being robbed of its moisture by the wife's sweaters! Johanna Quote
Members sheathmaker Posted December 22, 2007 Members Report Posted December 22, 2007 Johanna is exactly right. It would take months (if ever) to dry out a wrapped garment to any appreciable degree, and my vote would go with (if ever). Go ahead and wrap it have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Paul Quote
Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted December 22, 2007 Ambassador Report Posted December 22, 2007 REGIS, I KNOW A LITTLE, BUT THE PEOPLE IN THAT STORE ARE CRAZY. TISSUE PAPER IS NOT GOING TO DRY THAT LEATHER OUT. I HAVE BOUGHT A LEATHERCOAT FOR MY WIFE IN A VERY UPSCALE STORE HERE IN MEMPHIS THE ONLY PRECAUTION THEY TOLD ME "DO NOT STORE THE LEATHER COAT IN A PLASTIC BAG IN THE CLOSET, OVER A PERIOD OF TIME THE PLASTIC WILL SITCK TO THE LEATHER" Quote
