Members macleatherwork Posted February 27 Members Report Posted February 27 Hello, I'm trying to research a good machine for medium weight garment sewing, such as jackets and pants. Veg tan and other thick leathers are not my priority, but might be nice to do occasionally. My current domestic machine can only handle up to 2oz but struggles and skips if that's doubled up. I'm hoping to invest in a walking foot that can do at least the 4-5oz range with bulky seams but I'm unsure if these industrials are too powerful for my uses? I'm considering the Sailrite Leatherwork due to its small size, slow motor control, and customer support. Is this like using a chainsaw to cut a sandwich, or are these machines appropriate for garment work as well? Thank you very much Quote

Members macleatherwork Posted February 28 Author Members Report Posted February 28 I have gone through that thread, it's a marvel of information but so much technical specs that it left me needing reassurance. Most of the specific machine advice in there is about hard and heavy leather, or trying to find machines that can do everything (they can't). I know these machines, such as the sailrite one, can handle the rare high end of what I need, which would be topstitching 7mm of soft leather (waistband attaching to back yoke with flatfelled seams) so I'm hoping someone can assure me that it's not crazy to use of these mostly for thinner applications. Also you are going to be limited to a thread size maximum of V92. kgg Edited February 28 by kgg Quote
