Leather punching with complex shapes?

What is this style of leatherworking called? Are there many people doing / interested in this sort of work?
I believe it is done with shaped leather punches ...

It is mostly called filigree work or filigree punching. Used to be pretty common in the 70's and some people referred to it as "hippie style bags and belts". Those shaped punches can be bought in sets and really quite inexpensive.

I have a set of 39 filigree punches I will sell for $125 plus shipping.

A little difficult photographing them unless I done them one at a time.

Leatherworking is such a varied and interesting art medium. I had picked up some of those in an estate tool, and it took me a while to figure out what they were. The more I learn, the more I realize that I'll never be able to focus enough effort into learning all of the different ways of working leather.

I forget where I got those punches. I placed colored leather on the backs of the leather I filigreed.

I have been at this a long time and learn something I missed every day.

Your filigree work is gorgeous! How did you get such symmetry? 

Springfield leather had these filigree tools on sale a while ago. I don't know if they still sell them.
