4 prong diamond punches

Recommended Posts

I bought one of the 4 prong diamond punches to help me even and straighten my sewing line. That sure works fine and helps me make nice even straight line but, the holes are not round (like awl). Are there different kinds of 4 prong punches? Sewing is easy but I'm just not sure it is correct. Anyone use these for hand sewing or, does everybody use an awl.

Thanks for any tips.

I tried using one to punch the holes, but the holes were too big and the stitches looked too loose in the holes. Ideally, they should be snug in the holes that are punched.

What I do now (and I will defer to those of you more experienced with hand stitching) is to use the diamond hold punch to mark the holes and use an awl to punch through the marks, at the angle "suggested" by the marks created by the diamond hole punch. Clear as mud? Roit!

Here's a sample of the stitching after I use the 4 hole punch. Does the stitching look correct? Kate mentioned a loose look when she tried. Does this look loose?

This is just a practice carving peice that I used to practice stitching so I'm not making anything particular.

Thanks,

Regis

Regis, I know what Kate is referring to when she mentions large holes, etc., since that was my experience with these types of tools. However, your stitches look just fine to my eyes, so if what you're doing is working for you, I say keep on doing it! :)

Best, -Alex
