Suze Report post Posted February 13, 2009 One of the gentlemen I know on another forum told us that his father's dog has just died from Salmonella poisoning they traced it to the treats he had been given...While they were not peanut butter flavor the peanut butter had been used as a binder they were a national brand and bought at a PetSmart in Ohio. Poor puppy.

Suze Report post Posted February 13, 2009 well the peanut butter probably was. And this type of food is listed on the USDA website http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/pean...dex.cfm#PetFood I figure it doesn't hurt to "spread the word" I can't even fathom what this poor man is going through, I would be ready to kill myself if I found out I gave my "babies" a poisen treat and they got sick... rawhide1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Suze Thanks for the warning. I guess I'm a little surprised such a thing would hurt a dog. My dogs as I'm sure others as well will eat anything. I mean they drag dead stuff up in the yard all the time. And some of the stuff has been dead for quite some time. Heck the other day I fed three of them a ham that was quite old and other than being swolled up from eating so much they were no worse for the wear. I know your intentions are well but I just don't know if I believe a dog can get sick from salmonella. Not to sound gross but dogs eat poop all the time and don't get sick. I'm thinking there was something else in those treats that made that dog die. I hope I don't come across as being argumentative as that is not my intention. Mike Well all that means is that YOUR dogs have a healthy enough imune system to fight off the effects of bad meat. Next time you might not be so lucky. and people can eat something tainted with salmonilla and one person can be just fine and the next one die, and the third one just have "the flue". You see it all the time in the papers about "outbreaks" at some such buffet or another. Most housepets DON'T drag up dead things to eat (they whine when they can see a dime sized piece of the bottom of the bowl) - and I haven't noticed my pets eating poop Just as each person is different so are critters. As he did say that the dog died of a long battle with this - I am assuming he was under a Vet's care. So I would think that tests were done to see what the dog had. tonyc1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Our dogs regularly drag home dead animals like rabbits, hares and wallabies or possum and chew on them. They even recycle vomit, they are quite disgusting at times! Tony.
wildrose Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Actually, the peanut/salmonella thing is coming out of good ol' Virginia here. Dogs can handle alot of naturally yucky things (like eating cat poo from the litter box, which I HAVE seen...and horse manure...I've seen that too), but diseases are obviously something else entirely. rawhide1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Suze I didn't mean to offend ya. I guess I missed the part about house pets. I live out in the county and have four dogs and I treat them like dogs. Which means they run the woods and eat dead things and yes poop. Although we do keep our catahoula (sp) in the house in a kennel at night. That's how nature made them. So maybe if people would treat a dog like a dog instead of a like a pampered kid THEIR dogs immune system would work like it should! And I'm not saying not to take care of your animals such as shots and what not. People usually get sick from salmonella when someone doesn't wash their hands after pooping and then handles food that someone is going to eat. That's the biggest culprit as far as people go. And quite honestly for awhile when ever someone gets food poisoning some how it will get traced back to the peanut butter. Mike
tonyc1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 You know, a few miilion years ago we probably had the same immune system that animals have where we could have eaten anything and not get sick but as we evolved and got fussier and cleaner we lost that ability to cope with bacteria! bustedlifter Report post Posted February 14, 2009 I'm not sure if it's the salmonella that gets to the dogs, but maybe the melamine. It's been found in a lot of stuff coming out of China.

They even recycle vomit, they are quite disgusting at times!Tony. Mine do the same thing, except it's deer carcasses that hunters dump in the wetlands cuz they're afraid (that's spelled "L-A-Z-Y") of putting them in their own trash containers. I'd love to find out who does it, and drag the putrified carcass and leave it on their front porch, or toss it on the roof of their house to be discovered much, much later.... Nothing worse than to have a dog gnawing on the 6 month old remains of dozens of muskrat carcasses that some trapper tossed out to rot.... Love to slip a few of those under the seats in their cars... And when it comes to dogs and the droppings of other animals? Well, we just won't go there today. Hilly
yaklady Report post Posted February 14, 2009 I feel so lucky having yaks instead of dogs. They might drag home a pine tree branch once in a while, but they never knaw on anything but grass and yak snacks.

rawhide1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 In a earlier post I stated people usually get sick when someone uses the rest room and doesn't wash their hands before handling food. I was thinking of e coli not salmonella. My apologies for the mistake. Mike
