jsroye96 Report post Posted February 18, 2009 Hi everyone, My name is John and I have been interested in getting into leather working for a long time, I figure now is as good a time as any. I am very interested in making larger projects like bags, and holsters,etc. and making them look professional. It's pretty ambitious considering I have never done any leather working. I am really starting from ground zero, so any and all input about the best way to get started would be really appreciated. What kind of projects do people usually start out with? I am tempted to jump right into trying to make a bag or something but I am sure thats much too advanced for me at this very early point in the game. I don't know what kind of tools i would need or how to use them or anything.. I would like to say I am very happy to be here and hope to soak up as much knowledge as possible from ya'll. I work for the railroad but have been temporarily laid off or furloughed as the railroad calls it. It boils down to months with no job. I don't know, maybe I am hoping to possibly make this into something I could possibly make a little income from......eventually. Anyway, I would just like to say hello to everyone and I welcome all knowledge, opinions and instruction directed my way. Your new friend, John. But we will be glad to help you along your journey to creating what you envision. And be happy to chat about the kids, the in-laws, and local weather conditions along the way. Pull up a seat! Like Katie said, start out with what you're most passionate about. That will give you the drive to work past the inevitable boo-boo's. Search the forum for hints and techniques and just ask. Lots of people here that want to help. There is a series of Al Stohlman books "The Art of Making Cases" that will help, as well. Tandy carries them. Hope your furlough is a short one.
