hmmm... sounds like living under a dictatorship. Are you sure you didn't miss something in the news lately? heh heh, ..... like, Communist China invaded or something?

I'm quite happy that I live in a place where you don't feel the need to have one

I don't have a state-issued ccw permit. The "Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act" (18 US Code 926B and 926C) was signed into law by George Bush in 2004. It allows any current or retired law enforcement officer to carry concealed weapons in ANY state without a state-issued permit.

There's some requirements...

-You must be, or have been, a law enforcement officer that was allowed to carry a firearm.

-If you are retired, you must have been on active duty with a law enforcement agency for at least 15 years.

-You must qualify with your firearm yearly, even after being retired.

-You must carry your LEO credentials, and if retired, a letter stating you've qualified within the past 12 months.

what is an un-restricted license and how did you get it!!!!!!

pete

In NY, counties issue Pistol Permits and each county can restrict the permit. Some are restricted to Possession Only or Hunting/Target or Business Only. You can't carry outside of your restriction. An unrestricted permit allows 24/7 carry in any place legal to carry. That excludes NY City which issues its own permits.

I live in Erie county and it is quite difficult to get an unrestricted permit in this county. In the next county... Niagara... it is quite easy. In the bad counties like Erie, you have to prove a substantial need to carry a handgun concealed. I did so and got the unrestricted. It took over a half hour of arguing my case to an Asst. Supreme Court Justice. It wasn't easy. You have to be very well prepared and a little lucky.

It should not be that way, but in NY it is... and there is nothing you can do about it.

When I carry, it's a rifle and pretty much anyone with eyes can see it. It has saved my life more than once, but not against humans - against DOMESTIC DOGS. People let their dogs run loose, they pack up... and it can be a bad thing.

Pretty much everyone in my "neighborhood" (an area of about 1,000 square miles) is very well armed. Perhaps because of this, people leave each other alone for the most part.

I have to say, I don't get the "darned liberals" comment. All the liberals I know have guns. Every last one. That would include me, and Mr. Horsehair Braider. None of us would ever dream of trying to stop others having guns. Must be something else that gets people going on that sort of thing.

You'd understand if you lived in Wisconsin. Really.

Liberals who own guns.... brings up all sorts of issues. Sounds schizophrenic if you ask me. It's like God fearing good ol' boy conservatives who vote Democrat just because their Daddy did. sheesh.....

I'm reminded of something I once heard, although I can't remember who said it... "If all of us were armed, people would be a lot more polite to each other."

Unfortunately, there are lots of people who see guns through the veil of ignorance and prejudice. Some of them know nothing about guns except what they've been told by others. One case in point: about 1994 I was part of the security team on a 10-day canoe and kayak trip in Alaska with Chelsea Clinton. She was about 15 or 16 at the timeand one might think the President's daughter would be a spoiled little brat, but Chelsea proved to be a very sweet, bright, kind, and polite kid.

One evening, while sitting in camp, someone mentioned that myself and the two Secret Service agents had guns. Chelsea immediately stated, "Guns are evil!"

I tried to explain to her that a gun is a THING. It can't be good. It can't be evil. It can only be used by someone who is good or evil. She wouldn't have anything to do with that. She repeated, "Guns are evil", and I realized I was wasting my breath. She'd been conditioned from birth to believe guns were evil, and no one was going to change her mind. Unfortunately, almost everyone else in the group, most of whom were from Washington DC, agreed with her.

At one point on that trip, Chelsea and her friends experienced the thrill of having a totally wild Alaska Brown Bear walk past us, not more than 40 feet away. At another point in the trip we all watched a mother bear and two young cubs browsing in a meadow. I doubt Chelsea or any of her friends understood the fact that if either of those bears had decided to be aggressive the only thing that could have stopped it was those "evil guns" some of us were carrying.

........... She repeated, "Guns are evil", ............

Sounds like you were talking to a wind-up doll. Pull the string and she says, "guns are evil". Then her head spins around and green stuff blows out of her sweet little mouth.

That's interesting... I think my point is, maybe don't paint with such a broad brush. There are all sorts of people and I for one welcome the diversity... If everyone agreed with everything I said I would find that pretty boring. Different points of view are what make life interesting and I always am interested to hear what people have to say. Don't assume that because a person might be seen as "liberal" that they are totally evil. They may (like me) raise goats, know how to spin and weave, be able to identify crops growing in a field, and have guns... lots of them... and know how to shoot them, and actually be able to hit the target. And I am by no means unique.

And I think my point is, maybe you aren't really a Liberal. Oh and by the way, better not be bragging about how many guns you have because the Liberals running the government right now are working their little Liberal fingers to the bone trying to make them all illegal.
