TwoCrow Report post Posted January 10, 2008 I made a couple of these for a friend. Instead of a ring he wanted a snap. I don't need to do any ground-work before I start braiding because the horse hair naturaly makes a ball going though the leather strap. I would like to see the ground-work and the materials you guys all use on your projects. Good Day!

rawhide1 Report post Posted January 10, 2008 TwoCrow Nice work!! If I use groundwork I use tape or sometimes i'll build a smaller knot as my groundwork. Mike
skip Report post Posted January 10, 2008 is the horsehair looped through the leather fob? and what type of knot would you call that? the know looks really uniform and even. nice
TwoCrow Report post Posted January 11, 2008 The hair is pulled though a 1/2" hole in the leather fob. When I tie the hair together it makes a ball that I tie a knot on. The knot is a wrap and a half Turk knot with a interweave in half of it. I would still like to see a post of somebody's ground work. I am more of a visual learner. Opagon Report post Posted January 11, 2008 I too use tape for some of my ground work when working with hair. Most often on knots that I put on headstalls and reins I use an additional knot (spanish ring) for the base for the shape.

TwoCrow Report post Posted January 11, 2008 Opagon, what keeps the tape/knot from sliding down over time?
Opagon Report post Posted January 11, 2008 Opagon, what keeps the tape/knot from sliding down over time? For me, I think it is mostly how tightly they are put together. Lately I have been stealing my husbands athletic tape which has a little more glue in it. I like it cause it sticks to the hairs better and holds the strings in place. A down fall to the increase in adhesive is that it makes it harder to get underneath some of the strings while tying the knot in the last couple of passes. As far as the over time part, really cant say as the oldest Shuflies I made are less than 2 years old. Not sure if that helps, Heather
