Rayban Report post Posted July 16, 2009 I picked up a set of paper wheels yesterday, and after loading one with grit, and the other with rouge, I've been sharpening everything in sight. Got my round knife sharper than it's been since I've owned it, some other utility knives, kitchen knives, my edge trimmer, and even got new life from an Exacto blade I was about to discard. I have a ways to go yet, but the little time I've spent on it really has been encouraging. Before when I tried sharpening stuff, I usually made them duller.....not no mo. Loose the grit wheel though and replace it with a fine belt on a belt sander (about 240 grit). I can take an unfinished edge to razer sharp in a matter of a few minutes. Now with the rouge wheel in between, I think that will be the way for me....it would be a real drag re-loading the grit wheel all the time. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
rickybobby Report post Posted July 17, 2009 I have had these for 7 years, I have only redone the grit wheel once. It was not from use but from moving from Hawaii (humid climate) to Arizona (dry climate) it warped the heck out of it!!! Are you using bee's wax on it? That seems to help save it. They do work great!!! I bought mine from a guy at a leather show named Santa Claus! He had a white beard and white hair, they said he had his name changed leagally! I used to put my head knives on it but I've gone back sharpening them by hand, then taking them through a couple polishing stages. I recently had to replace my motor and went to Sears and picked up a bench grinder that is variable speed from 1750 to 3500 rpms. That worked out really well. I reversed the base so that I could work on the top of the wheels as they turned away from me, and modified the wheel guards so that they exposed the top of the wheels instead of that the area facing you. The reason I jumped in though is that I used to use the bees wax and have dumped it for a tube of grease that does a better job of lubricating the grit wheel, giving me better cutting and less heat. If you like using the stationary belt....3M makes some really fine belts....my favorite is a 1200 grit belt that does a great job of refining an edge before you start buffing.....just thought I would share that......
