Rawhide Report post Posted August 6, 2009 If anyone is looking to get rid of a Beard polyurethane maul, please let me know and let me know the asking price. Thanks, Marlon
whinewine Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Marlon, I may be mistaken, but I thought (???) I had seen them listed in Springfield Leather's catalogue. Call Kevin Hopkins & if I'm wrong (which I very well might be right now ), he may know where to get one. I'm just too busy getting ready for the Celtic Classic. Sorry, russ

Sorry, russ Hi Russ, Thanks for the info. I looked at Springfield's website and only saw Barry King's mauls. I have a couple of those already. Bob Beard doesn't make mauls anymore, so I'll have to buy used. I'll get with Kevin anyway, he may have one lying around somewhere. Thanks again. They were produce a similar maul. Take a look. If you cannot find it let me and I will dig it out. Maybe you can call them? They were back east somewhere. I have seen Ed's mauls and I think they are beautiful...I have a couple of BK mauls now and they use a similar material for the striking surface. Which is the reason I want the Beard maul. It doesn't flake and chip and leave "dandruff" all over the piece. I haven't used any of Ed's mauls, but if it flakes any, I'll be in the same boat I'm in now. Bob's mauls never flake. I saw an ad somewhere like that and I believe the company was in Kansas somewhere, but I haven't called them yet. Kevin hopkins said he may have one around, so I'm waiting to hear back from him. Marlon, The Maul you are refering. to was originally mfg by the Dyno co. out of Kansas. It was an injected cast poly material around a weighted center. It does not wear and it does not strike off on a tool like the the nylon mauls. Beard started making them after Dyno stopped. Marlon, are you familar Wayne Jesski, from Elko Neveda, he makes a maul, that has the characteristics you are lookig for. It looks similar to BK maul , stacked leather handle , but the striking material is not the hard nylon. I have one and it is my favorite maul. Steve
BearMan Report post Posted September 30, 2009 Hi Everybody, I just happened to look at this thread, especially when I saw the reference to Bob Beard. I would love to get my hands on one of those also,, if for nothing else,,, just for another good comparison. While it is true that most Nylon flakes & sheds over time, I believe I've found a particular type that doesn't. I've been using this type of polymer for about 10 years now, & I've never had anybody tell me of any flaking or shedding. My personal maul that I started making mauls with, is slightly older, with no degrade of the surface, other than looking a little dirty. I can't say exactly why this particular type works so well, but it seems to. I do know that the type I use, is somewhat more costly than the types I think others are using. Marlon, If you'd like, I'd be happy to send you my old maul, to try. I believe this one is about 7-8 years old now. Kind of old & ugly,,, but it might be worth checking out. Just let me know. He was there last year, so I would suspect he'd be there this year too.
