somewhereinusa Report post Posted August 23, 2009 I was really surprised by the new look, and I'll wait out the growing pains, but I just want to say early on that FLASH is BAD. (If that's what it is) Some of us live in places that dial up is the ONLY option. Anything with flash just won't show up, at least not this month. When I click on a thumbnail now I get the dreaded wheelie thingie that usually indicates a flash something is coming. There were a number of thumbs I tried to look at this morning and gave up on. Also when I see someones projects I like I save it to my computer, kind of a library of ideas. If a flash image ever does show up you can't save it. I also noticed that the whole site is much slower loading than before, probably because of all of those new bells and whistles.
Leerwerker Report post Posted August 23, 2009 The problem I have with the flash is the size of the pictures - I tried to look at the vinagroon holster this morning and it was ten times the size of my screen. How do we limit the flash picture shower size to screen size? I had the hardest time getting to the navigate buttons to get out of it .... Either that or we need to somehow force people to post pictures not bigger than 640 across...?!? Dunno the solution - just throwing out suggestions... MHolzer Report post Posted August 23, 2009 FWIW, If you mean a wheelie thing like this :, that means AJAX, not flash. And, yeah, there's a bit of AJAX flowing here, I can feel it.
CitizenKate Report post Posted August 23, 2009 FWIW, If you mean a wheelie thing like this :, that means AJAX, not flash. And, yeah, there's a bit of AJAX flowing here, I can feel it. You won the cigar! There is quite a bit more javascript (including numerous ajax and jquery functions) integrated into this new version of the forum system than previous versions. We have already taken some steps to improve the overall performance of the site since last night's upgrade, and will have time to look more into it when Johanna gets the rest of the custom features restored that we had in the previous version. Meanwhile, your feedback is highly valued, so please feel free to comment. Thanks, Kate
RandyScott Report post Posted August 23, 2009 It is still too early for me to have decided whether I like the 'new' look or not. As mentioned, it is slower than expected. From my days when I installed and managed conversions from one system to another, if the new system is slower than the old, then the user's perception of any benefit decreases exponentially with the delay - even if by seconds. To put that comment in proper context, that pertained to a data entry application. It would be nice to have been provided a time line as to the course of events relating to this upgrade. I usually login daily and it was a surprise to me. I really liked the old 'new posts' feature as that allowed me to quickly scan all the posts since my last visit, whether hours or days, check the posts I wanted to read, and skip the rest. That was quick, fast and efficient. It appears from an earlier post in this thread the transition to the upgrade is not complete yet, so that may be resolved in the near future. It usually takes a few days for all the 'dead fish' to float to the top and be handled accordingly. I expect all will be well in a few days and we will soon forget the bumps encountered in the journey.
MHolzer Report post Posted August 23, 2009 Randy, at the top right of the board under the search box is a link that says "View New Content". I think that is what you are looking for.
Spence Report post Posted August 23, 2009 This 'upgrade' is very smart. It knows that I'm not overjoyed with it and when I try to discuss why, it "looses" the post and gives me the following: [#20310] Your secure key, used to verify you are posting the topic, did not match the one submitted. Please go back, reload the form, and try again.
somewhereinusa Report post Posted August 23, 2009 Apparently, when you click on a thumbnail, if there is more than one picture, the system is loading all of the full size pictures and turning them into some sort of slide show. The pictures that I posted yesterday are resized properly for web use. One of them is only 16.6k at 600x400. When you click on one of the thumbs you have to wait for all three to load before you can view any one of them full size. You also don't get the option to save the picture for future reference. Whatever the wheelie thingie is, if you're on dial up, there is a good chance you won't see it. About the only bad thing about living where I do is the lack of any kind of high speed internet. A traffic jam is when two people show up at the stop sign at the same time. I live four miles from there. Dick
