Hello,

I am relatively new to Leather work and I have made a couple of Holsters and Cuffs for my hobby.

I found this forum while looking for information on on how to make some half chaps.

I did find all I wanted to know here! top marks huh?

Now I want to find a pattern and the " how to make" instruction for making "Mountain man boots"

Anyone out there know where I would find them?

Also I don't want them too heavy and wondered what would be the best material to use...

Thank you for your reply. Yes, they are what I'm looking for. How I missed that while looking through Tandy Web site I'll never know.

What should I use for the sole? I will use a deerskin for the "upper" boot.

I think this will give you a more authentic result than from a Tandy pattern

Smoked buckskin will make the best material for moccasins

As a Mountain Man and French Indian War re-enactor I highly recommend George White's "Craft Manual of North American Indian Footwear." (Availible at Crazy Crow Trading Post) This book became my Bible of authentic footwear of the fur trade era. It inspired me to make the ones shown below.

Spend the money and buy the book . . . it ain't that much for the wealth of information!
