Leather Ink Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Hello everyone! Well I'm sure you guys and gals are used to hearing it all on this site. I have been working with leather for 6 short years now and I love applying my quirky tattoo style artwork to leather. I do not tattoo, but it is interesting to carve on leather (let's people have tattoos without the permanence) and it has been selling well. I am very interested in meeting progressive minded leather artists in the northern California area, no that's not a pick up line, I have found that most leather workers that I have met in this area are not able to step away from the Stohlman era floral carvings. I'm not knocking the sheridan stuff, I'm just looking to move to another step and I believe it's time for me to look outside of my box as the tattoo thing will only last so long. Doing tattoo art on leather is a great combination because you can add physical depth to your pieces and bring them life in ways you can't using just ink and skin. swinewerx Report post Posted October 14, 2009 I live in nor cal also, twenty miles south of sack uh tomatooeess that would be Sacramento. I have been doing the leather work for six years , of course learnng the hard way. The only reason it was hard is cuz I taught myself the first two years were tough. It did get better of course, I really love the leather work as well. The house we just got into is actually too big, this is why I have a leather room. I certainly did not start off with floral of any kind. That was later, after I got real good, and it really is nice. I myself and the littl lady have quite a few jap crap chops,but that is whatI actually love also. I only have chops, she has one chop and two normal bikes. I lost a chop last nov due to a car that hates motorcycles. I also gave my box shadow away , very nice material but too darn pretty to chop up. If you do decide to come on down you may be somewhat shocked at all the chops that I make from anchor material. That would mean that even though it really was't an anchor it sure looked like one with all the debris that built up from sitting out in the elements, at least the motor turns over ans has good compression. My prefered type of tooled leather would be an insane ADHD type of flavor along with way too much tooling . I love going extreme with our personal stuff, I try to convince people who want work done to do the same, but they always go very mild with barely any tooling. Kind of like tattoos if you are going to get one study in your head for a while then go to your tatt artistand go big!!! No tiny little microscopic tatts. I just got into leather working and so far only have made several holsters and some tinkering around projects. I've always been wanting to try out some tatoo designs on leather, but never got around to collecting tatoo graphics yet. I'm all with you on this-moving another step beyond the conventional way of doing leather work! As a matter of fact, I've been doing leather work for umptin years now and I have never heard of Al Stohlman nor Sheridan till I recently got into these leather artisans forums.LOL! I also like applying the aesthetics and motifs of traditional tattoos to my leather craft.
