Stitching Horse Plans

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for plans to build a stitching horse. I know there are a couple out there, maybe even some "custom" ones. I have the one in the hand stitching book by Al Stohlman.

Thanks.

I know some people where saying awhile back on here that they were going to make some stitching horses to sell, we saw some nice pictures and I never did see any for sale. I wouldnt mind getting a rock solid stitching horse with a GOOD set of jaws that line up nice and straight! Is anyone making or selling them now?

I've seen some really nice ones too. I was hoping that someone would share their "custom" plans or maybe sell the plans for it.

PM JBird. I believe he makes them though I do not know what his schedule looks like right now. If he builds them, they are going to be a great piece of work. Good luck.

www.awharness.com I am currently making a stitching horse from the "Farm Woodworking" book mentioned above. I have completed the seat, which I made of vertically laminated maple and white oak, 2" thick. I made the legs 2-3/8" square with the top tenons turned to about 1-1/4," the legs are straight down, and not splayed as in the pattern. I am currently making the clamp out of pecan that I milled to a full 2" thick and 5-1/2" wide. I cut a 4-1/2" full thickness tenon, so I had to glue an 1-1/2" strip to the bottom of the fixed side of the clamp. What I should have done was cut a 1/2" shoulder on the outside of this tenon. As you will see from the plans the hinged side of the clamp is bolted onto the fixed side, thus proving a full width shoulder 2" thick. I cut the large mortice for the full thickness tenon plumb rather than pitched about 4 degrees as shown in the pattern. The full width tenon on the fixed side of the clamp was only about 3-1/2" wide and 4-1/2" deep so I was able to cut the mortice on our morticing machine. I cut a straight pin about 1"X1/2"X6" with a very slight taper on one end about 2" long, so it was easy to drive in. This is as far as I've gotten, I stll need to bandsaw the clamp jaws to the clamshell shape, fit the spring in place and attach the strap. A friend is doing the metal work for me. I have never posted a picture to this site, so I don't really know how to go about. In any event, like all grandpas, I probably won't put in much more shop time before Christmas.

Best regards, Walt Rollison/Litlhof

How do you download the attachments in a post? I want to build the stitch horse, but cannot save the pages.

Edited to correct my instructions:

The 'pages' referred to are thumbnails of images, a '.gif' image. Left click on the image to open it to full size; right click the image and a drop down menu is opened, select 'Save Picture as', a Save Picture dialogue box opens, select the folder to save the image to, enter the File Name, i.e, horse3 (it should have pre-loaded the image name), verify the Save as Type is ‘GIF (*.gif)’and, select Save and the image should be saved.

And I am running Windows XP..

Well I do not know why, but Firefox would not download it, but I got it in IE. Because of the links on the left and right, had to go to the bottom center of the photo to right click.

Thank you for you help,

Phil Brunson

I was going to make one sometime in the next few months. I intended to make a "U" shape out of 1x4s and hinge the right leg to close and then I would just tie twine around it. They seem like something that can be great, or just there, but so long as it does the job I'll be happy.

Thanks for those plans. I also had to open IE to get them to download. I was thinking of a smaller one. But its a start

The last time I was in Sheridan for the show there was a man there that had several stitching horses that he made for sale, they were very nice and solid but they were very high end priced, not saying they were not worth it but for the money you could have a very nice down payment on a sewing machine. Not sure how many he sold. Also the Weaver Cataloge has a stitching horse in it you can buy for a reasonalbe price.
