RustyMelton Report post Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) Hi All, I thought I'd share a few pictures of the last case that I finished up. I thought it turned out pretty nice, but as always there's a few things I'd like to have done a little better. I'll put a few pictures of it in progress and with it finished up. Please let me know what you think, both the good and bad. Thanks, Rusty Edited February 23, 2010 by RustyMelton

smokeydaz Report post Posted February 23, 2010 The artist always finds something that we would have done differently. This bag is really great , nice job.
Storm Report post Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) Rusty this is one of the finest peices I have ever seen! The carving and the color and finish. I would have to say she is worth twice whatever is paid for her! It is a master work of construction and in my opinion one of the finest cue cases I have yet seen. If I may ask what did you use to dye and finish her off with? Makes me want to take up pool so that I could walk right into the hall with this on my shoulder. This belongs in a Hall Of Fame!!! The photos are excellent too! Storm Edited February 23, 2010 by Storm
JohnBarton Report post Posted February 23, 2010 The Good: This is your best piece yet in my opinion. Simply great. Wonderful layout and attention to detail. Superb craftsmanship and going the extra mile on construction. The blind seam is one of the hardest things to do in cue cases and you did a great job with it. The Bad: We didn't make it :-) Really. Top shelf Rusty. This is the first case I have seen of yours where I can honestly say that I wouldn't have done a thing differently. You're there man. You're there. RustyMelton Report post Posted February 23, 2010 Thanks Doc, I appreciate it! smokeydaz, you are right, I think all of us are probably our own worst critic. Thanks for your comment. Storm, thanks for your comment. I used fiebings dye, I just mixed some dark brown and a little cordovan and reduced it way down for the color. Then used some clear lac for a resist and used dark brown antique paste and then a little bit more clear lac on top of that. And of course I sold it to cheap, I've got to quit doing that. John, thanks I appreciate it. I was thinking of you when I drew it around the spots for the handle, and I agree that it just looks better that way. There's a few spots in the pattern that I really wished I'd of done a little different, but it's to late now. But I learned from it and the one I'm working on now looks a little better. Sewing this one was tough, on the square cases I use 6-7 and on this one I used 8-9 and it made it pretty darn hard. It took the better part of an afternoon to sew the blind seam. But I sure like the looks of panel better than the way I usually do them.
Charke Report post Posted February 24, 2010 That is amazing. This is my first post to his board and I am happy to find it. I thought I would post some of my own leather working, and I will, but comming across this peice is daunting! The callibur of skill required to do that is mind blowing. I haven't done any antiquing and my tooling needs, well, more tools and a good bit more practice. This is what I would shoot for. Just incredible artwork. With that over your shoulder, it just screams, hollars and bellows out - 'pool shark'. That is the bad, by the way, that everyone will think you are going to take them for all their money. If you are as good at pool, I imagine you would. I did think it was a quiver. That would be a heck of a peice on the fields of LARP or SCA. AndyL1 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 That is pretty fantastic work! The thing that stands out most to me is the little shields where the handle straps attach. I love the fact that you worked those into the design in the tooling. Little attention to details like that really send this over the top. Cheers, Andy
