Johnny B Report post Posted February 26, 2010 OK so I am trying new things with every project. I am now making a sheath for a rather large knife. I have some buckskin pieces left over from another project that I want to do an inlay with. My question to all you masters out there is what happens after I finish the sheath and I dye it? The vegi-tan will shrink but the buckskin will not. I am thinking that it will wrinkle when the vegi-tan shrinks. How do I prevent this from happening? Johnny B Report post Posted February 28, 2010 Well since no one has answered my question I can ony come to the conclusion that no one knows. Guess I will go back to Leathercraft Forum where they know what thay are doing. I received 6 answers the first day on this subject over there.

UKRay Report post Posted February 28, 2010 Oh dear, Johnny B, you have got yourself upset haven't you. Perhaps it is time to stand back and look at why you didn't get any answers? One of the reasons people don't reply to a question like yours is that they don't want to appear a smartass. You asked for opinions from 'masters' and I'm afraid that seems to have discouraged ordinary people from responding. Nobody wants to set themselves up as a 'master' in case others throw rocks at them. Try a more 'laid back' and friendly approach and I'm sure folks here will help you all they can. I find LW members extremely helpful and incredibly knowledgeable. Ray
Johnny B Report post Posted February 28, 2010 No not upset at all. Just surprised that no one took the time to help me out. Tells me alot about the people on this forum. And still no answer to my question. Again tells me alot about the people on this forum. Have a wonderful day.
terrahyd Report post Posted February 28, 2010 HI john ; you might dye the two pieces alone then sew together..just a thought...
whinewine Report post Posted February 28, 2010 You know, sir, that it's not nice to flame this forum just because we all didn't drop everything and answer your question immediately if not sooner (especially in the light of people giving you answers on that other forum...- What exactly do you want to hear- the exact same answers? ). This is one of the nicest and the best forums out there. While we all have our differences here from time to time, we are all a good group and we all mean well, and yes, there are times when posts go unanswered... oh well And as UKRay would concur, attitude is important

That is ok. There was nothing wrong with my attitude in my original post, again "reading comprehension". I simply ask a question then proceeded to pay people on here a compliment by referring to them as masters. Most on here are masters compared to me. But no problem. I have found a forum that welcomes newbies and go out of their way to help. I have even received e-mails welcoming me to their forum. Real ladies and gentlemen over there. ChuckBurrows Report post Posted March 1, 2010 (edited) Despite the "attitude" there are others who may want to know so here goes - one should have no problems using buckskin as an inlay - where your idea that the veg tan would shrink and the buckskin wouldn't I have no idea????? As an example....buckskin inlays, veg tan surround over a veg tan core........ FWIW - I've been at this for 50 years and am a full-time maker - as to being a master - most of those I know care less about such labels, in the main we are all students..with more or less experience.......and BTW most of us have a life other than the forums and cannot always be Johnny on the spot to answer - Edited March 1, 2010 by ChuckBurrows
abn Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Chuck, thanks for taking the time to answer Johnny's question and for posting pics of a similar project. Beautiful work, as always.
particle Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Indeed - Chuck, that looks absolutely superb! I've only handled buckskin a couple of times (sample pieces mailed to me from a (now closed) tannery. I was surprised at how soft and flexible it was - I can't imagine having any problems at all with wrinkling from shrinkage. But, it definitely makes sense to dye prior to assembly, thus further eliminating any of those concerns.
Pelallito Report post Posted March 8, 2010 Chuck, Beautiful sheath. Thanks for posting it and your stitching pony tutorial. I made one following your instructions. I have not been here very long, but everyone has been very helpful! Regards, Fred
electrathon Report post Posted March 8, 2010 Guess I will go back to Leathercraft Forum where they know what thay are doing. I received 6 answers the first day on this subject over there. well what did the 6 tell you to do? This guy is rather pathetic. Of his 6 answers (looking in the first 24 hour period) one was someone asking what he ment, two were suggestions and two were responces from himself. It looks more like JohnnyB is the one who needs the reading comprehension class.
TexasJack Report post Posted March 9, 2010 [Any question that gets Chuck to post pics of his awesome work is a worthy question indeed! Some people don't express themselves well when they type. Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt this time.It took time for someone who has enough experience to read the post and reply with a definitive answer. You got the answer. Be nice about it.

You have to understand that people like this are very needy individuals- if you don't give them immediate stroking, immediate gratification, you then become their enemy. There are prisons full of guys with exactly this attitude- I know this from experience. Eventually, someone on the other forum will piss him off & then that group will also be his enemy. russ
