Members swivelsphinx Posted February 26, 2010 Members Report Posted February 26, 2010 About a year ago, an aquaintance of mine tried to pawn off on me some projects he had finished with Tandy's new line of "Eco" dyes. His lack of expertise in the medium aside, I was *still* not pleased. Now mind you, I paint in acrylic *paint* all the time. However, paint is *not* dye. Dye is not paint, and should not act like a paint! I noticed that without any finish, didn't take much to start the Eco-Line colors running ! This guy tried to tell me at the time that spirit and oil leather dyes were going to be universally banned in 2010. I called Fiebings to check that out. The rep there told me that this simply was not true. Tandy was going to phase some of them out over time, but there was no plan to stop production any time soon. Of course, I was a consumer of Tandy's Pro-Dye line for most of the tooty-fruity colors that some of my projects call for such as purple and turquoise. Fiebings still makes several greens, yellow and a few other "brights" (their red is still one of the best I've used), but sadly no on the ones such as purple. (Purple is one of those that doesn't seem to mix true). I checked out to see what other brands there were and Angellus is one that Springfield Leather carries wholesale. Angellus has some nice colors, but not purple. Anyone else have any suggestions on Spirit/Oil brands? Thanks, Swivelsphinx Quote
dirtclod Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) If your looking for Fiebings purple you can get on ebay. I never have tried mixing the colors. Edited February 26, 2010 by dirtclod Quote
gtwister09 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) Swivelsphinx, Have you considered the use of wood dye stains like TransTint? You can make them as water or alcohol based dyes. In the past I have used some on leather with alcohol and it was very colorfast (not purple though). Here's a link from Woodcraft and from Homestead. Woodcraft - TransTint Dyes Homestead TransTint Dyes I have also seen some wood workers use soap ingredients like potassium permanogate to create a purple stain but I have only seen it used with water and not alcohol. However most consider it pretty hazardous to use. In fact they generally rinse with a baking soda solution so that would make me believe that it was acidic in nature (assumption on my part) Regards, Ben Edited February 26, 2010 by gtwister09 Quote

Swivelsphinx Oh yes they do:-) If you scroll down on the link you'll find it ... http://turtlefeathers.net/text/angelus/dye.html the purple color on the page does not make it justice. These people has the whole colorchart that Angelus makes. Quote
Members swivelsphinx Posted March 5, 2010 Author Members Report Posted March 5, 2010 Hi! Thanks for the link. I have sent an e-mail to the folks who run it, and asked for clarification on the nature of the Angelus dyes they sell. I thought that Springfield carried the complete line, but didn't happen to see any purple at the time. Maybe I overlooked it. BIC permanent markers come in purple. *Grins* They sure do. I use Fiebings purple spirit dye regularly . . . it's a really good, strong colour! Huh! None of my suppliers seem to carry it right now- where are you getting yours? Thanks, Swivelsphinx No worries. I appreciate the advice. I do have the old Stolman color charts. I just was lookin' for an easier alternative first! The Swivelsphinx Quote
Members celticleather Posted March 6, 2010 Members Report Posted March 6, 2010 Huh! None of my suppliers seem to carry it right now- where are you getting yours? I get all my Fiebing's products from Abbey Saddlery, here in the UK. http://www.abbeysadd...&attr1=PURP0001 Have you tried contacting Fiebing's to find the nearest supplier that stocks the full range? Members hivemind Posted March 12, 2010 Members Report Posted March 12, 2010 None of my suppliers seem to carry it right now- where are you getting yours? Call D&L Leather at (315) 724-5215 and ask for Rocco. Tell him Dave H told you to call him. He has 4oz bottles of Fiebing's purple for about $3 each and may also have quart bottles for about $11. Shipping should be reasonable for you because we're in Utica NY, only a few hours from you. Quote
