First Go At A Top Hat

Recommended Posts

Now I've been wanting to have a go at making a top hat for a while, but always put it off as I was always worried about it not working and it takes a bit of leather to let it go to waste. But I finally gave it a go and personally I think it wasn't a bad first attempt, though it ended up a little big,but learned a lot and really if you aren't leaning whats the point in trying things.

Now this is done from a dress makers pattern which I modified especially in the brim, I thought in the end with all the hand stitching showing that it had a Steampunk look to it so to give it more of this type of look but some tall silver studs around the hatband. Used tanned black leather, didn't want to waste my tooling leather on my first attempt, though I want to do a tooled and died hat at some point. Brim is all wired as well so it holds it shape, was a big job getting that in after I had stitched all around it as it was a bit of an afterthought.

That is pretty sweet! I like the stitched look to it and the spikes. Good job!

Cheers,

Andy
