Drum Stuffed Or Veg Tanned

Which do you all prefer for braiding, I have used drum stuffed and havn't used any veg tanned. Was wondering what the pros and cons might be.

I haven't worked with that much roo which i know you prefer so this might not apply.

But i have made lace from veg tanned cow about 2mm even. And it handles well, stays very strong and feels good to work with as much as cow can.

But i can't even compare that to drum stuffed cow. Sorry

I've used both and usually prefer veg tanned. It kind of depends on what I'm making. If I think the item is going to be outside a lot and maybe get rained on or used a lot in the weather then I'll go with drum stuffed. Or, if I'm using veg tanned for such a project, I'll run the lacing through leather conditioner first, or sometimes I use corn oil. Just something to give it that little bit of protection against the elements.

For the most part I like the way veg tanned feels and it seems to do the job and hold up well. I will say though, when cutting the lace... the drum stuffed that I've used has cut like butter.

well i use both , i use veg tan dry for my bosals and use my own platting soap as i go , because drumed will bleed then whisky turns in to Brandy !!!! What the !!! but if i am doing a whip that is 1 tone belly it doesnt matter but two tone i will go the dry then add my soap to plait with

I all so use my soap to plait whips with even if they are drum , stuffed ,, it helps them strings to pull tighter , they slip up nice and tight with a bit of soap , "mutten fat and lux soap flakes "

My last two whiskey veg tanned roo hides have been drum stuffed. I LOVE working with them. They are so easy on my blades! They are wonderful in every way for what I do....except they are really dark. My customers really like the lighter whiskey hide. It seems everyone wants black and whiskey plaited headstalls and they don't get the contrast they like with the drum stuffed. However when you are talking bridles the dry whiskey will darken in a short time anyway, might as well have it all oiled up. LOL I'm trying to get a natural drum stuffed right now, I bet that's wonderful and will look great with black. I'm hoping they will like that too.
