Bed For 31-20 Singer

Recommended Posts

I bought a pristine 31-20 Singer and the mailman brought it today, brought the stand yesterday. They broke a peice off of the cast stand yesterday and today when I saw the box the head of the machine was in, I figured I was in trouble. They broke the foot (tab) off of the bottom of the machine. Flywheel side, the one that anchors the feed drive shaft. About 40% of the bolt threads are showing. The post office is being nasty even though it is insured. Local welder says the bed on sewing machine cannot be welded. Seller says you can split the head off of the bed and replace the bed. Advice on repairing this wreck? This machine is pristine and I would love to salvage it if at all possible. Thank you for any help I can get. Ken

You might try JB Weld. I have used it a couple times and it worked pretty good.

That sucks that the post office is giving you the run around. Their just like a regular insurance company happy to take you money but dang slow about paying out it seems.

If you've got all the bits they can be brazed back together again even though it's cast iron, but you need to find someone who really knows what they're doing who can preheat the part and cool it real slow after the work is done to stop it cracking. Expect to lose all the paint if you go that route.

Do you have pictures of the damage?

Ken,

I have a 31-20 just sitting. I bought it without a table and have just handwheeled it to sew up little things. I haven't touched it for a few months and wouldn't miss it is you need it for parts. PM me back if you are interested in it.
