BevJones Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Okay all you saddlemakers.....I am replacing some wool on saddle skirts. I am out of rubber cement. Who supplies Barge rubber cement? I do not want what Tandy carries because I heard it is not as good a grade as Barge. I was told never to use contact cement on wool/skirts as it is then hard to get them off for replacement in the future. Is this still the status quo? Any one recommend another brand besides Barge? Moderator bruce johnson Posted June 15, 2010 Moderator Report Posted June 15, 2010 Bev, Some use contact cement and some use rubber cement. I use rubber cement, and buy in small quantiuties to keep it fresh. I buy Elmers rubber cement in a pint can from whatever hardware or office supply store I happen to be near. I haven't found it that much different than Barge. I have had some of the brown clearish bottles of rubber cement be thick and unuseable when I got them. Likewise some other brands just weren't as good as Elmers. dirtclod Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Regular yellow Barge is all i have ever used to glue sheepskin to the skirt before i sew them. Never had a problem getting the old ones off afterwards. I did use some car headliner spay glue one time when i was out of Barge and it worked fine to. Contributing Member ClayB Posted June 16, 2010 Contributing Member Report Posted June 16, 2010 You can get Barge brand rubber cement from Montana Leather. They also carry a brand called Petronio's that is supposed to be even better. I think it's still made with toulene. Quote ClayB Badlands Leather Art blog Badlands Leather Art Website
Members mugwump Posted June 16, 2010 Members Report Posted June 16, 2010 i'm not sure about the tandy stuff, as i'm in california, and am always kinda leery about the 'newew-lower-voc-better-for-you-' stuff that keeps coming out (well nolt always, i guess, but def. when it comes to glues/contact cement at least), i've used the dap/weldwood contact cement for quite a while, you can still get it just about any hardware store, heck, even wallymart had it in the 3oz brown plastic bottles, and 16oz cans as of last night... as i remember, the pint can was like $5 or 6 bucks... still has all of the lovely toluene/acetone/hexane/etc... in it... ...good luck on the hunt... eric Quote ...the game is a foot... and you are a donut...
Members Kevin Posted June 16, 2010 Members Report Posted June 16, 2010 All four chapmakers we had, preferred Petronio's for rubber cement. I needed some at home one day and got some Best or maybe Best Test rubber cement from an office supply store and I thought it was far superior to the Petronio's. It seemed to have more rubber without being thicker somehow. Kevin Quote
BevJones Posted June 16, 2010 Author Report Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) Thanks everyone for the input. I think I will try Elmer's brand and if not satisfied I'll be calling Montana Leather. Edited June 16, 2010 by BevJones Quote
