Hi everyone , a couple of days ago i purchased the tools and leather to making a dog collar for my jack russell Katie . I have never worked with leather before, I enjoyed it so much , I started looking into working with leather and found this forum, I would like to make a second collar correctly and of a higher standard. I would like to know the process start to finish.

How would you stitch a pattern onto the collar, and any design ideas ?

Would you line it?

I am going to use a dark brown bridle leather (3.5mm thick) with brass fittings.

congrats on working with leather.

i dont have any ideas for you, but when you do your fancy stitching, you may want to watch out what type/size of patterns you do since it more or less perforates the leather and could weaken it.

A simple fishtail may be a good place to start . . . it doesn't weaken the strap.

Hi again and thanks for the advice . I really like the fishtail , I'm going to use the pattern on Katie's collar in white thread.

I have posted a pic of the collar , I know it aint great but i got to start somewhere !! Thanks again for the pattern it's the sort of thing i had in mi head, CHEER'S

You're off to a great start, katkon. The strap is cut nice and straight with clean edges. I gather you invested in a strap cutter...

One thing you may want to consider to give the collar a little more of a finished appearance, is to dye and slick the edges. There are many posts here with details on how to do that, especially an excellent tutorial by hidepounder who makes the most wonderful slicked edges you ever saw. If you need help finding them, just holler and we'll be glad to help.
