Cotton Dally/horn Wrap

Does anyone know or heard of using cotton for dally/horn wrap? I've seen this on a few ranch hand's saddles back home and they really liked it. Does anyone know how to wrap a horn with cotton? It was something like an old lead shank that was used????

Cotton rope was used as a wrap from the 1880's up thru the l940's for daly wraps. Rubber was not used and slick leather was to hard to control and wore put

horn wraps in a hurry. I haven't seen a working hand use cotton rope wraps since I was a button in West Texas. Actually I think it works alot better than mule

hide used today and rubber is fine for arena roping when you want to lock up your dalliesbut useless for running your dallies.

To install a rope wrap is kind of hard to describe but will give it a try. Get a length of old cotton rope (like real heavy clothes line or sash cord rope say about

1/2" in diameter. Take first turn around horn over the ropes bitter end and continue wrapping untill you aresatisfied with amount turns on your horn and how

thick a wrap you have and then thread your standing end ooof rope back down under the turns and trim off excess. Ihope this makes some sense to

you cause I ain't sure I understand what I just wrote. Good luck anyway.

I'm pretty sure that's what they used. It looked something like an old frayed cotton lead rope that was wrapped and set on itself. The boys liked it because it grabbed similar to mule hide but was easier and cheaper to find. My concern is that the rope may catch in between wraps but I try my darndest to get it 'er tight enough.

You will find that cotton rope is not the same as mulehide. The cotton rope is faster than rubber, but slower than mulehide, especially after the mulehide has slicked up some. If you want to go a little faster than the cotton rope, but slower than the mulehide, try some elk hide. Personally, I don't care for the rubber or cotton rope, as they make it really hard to slide any rope and therefore are harder on the stock. I have worked on some outfits, where you weren't allowed in the branding trap if you had rubber on your horn. Pig hide also works pretty well as a horn wrap, and way outlasts the mulehide. Latigo is another good horn wrap, but if you think mulehide is too fast I wouldn't even try latigo . Just my opinions from my personal experience.

Cotton is fine until you get grooves and it hangs your rope up.Lot of people hurt when that happens.I would stick with a leather wrap.
