redwinger Report post Posted April 27, 2008 I just found this web site through some of my friends...I'm fairly new to leather carving (did some a bunch of years ago, but it was trial and error on my part). I took a couple of classes at ther local Tandy store just to have some fun, and am getting back into it. I've done some leather upholstery work (mostly motorcycles), so if I can figure out how to post a picture or two, I've got one of my personal bike seat that I built (this seat has about 30,000 miles on it...that's why it's wrinkly on the front part...well used, and comfortable), and one of a leather carving maul I just got through making. Glad I found you guys !!!

Nocturne Report post Posted April 28, 2008 Welcome to the forum. An inquiring mind would like to know, as this is something I've been considering doing, how'd you made the maul? I've seen a couple home-made ones on here recently, all with very different methods of construction, so learning yet another way would be nice.

I made the head out of black Delrin with a steel slug inside to give it weight...the slug is drilled and threaded, then a threaded rod is inserted...leather "washers" are glued and stacked to the length needed, and a nut and washer is screwed on to pull everything tight...then all of it is turned on a wood lathe to the desired profile...I just played with it until I got the shape and size I wanted, and to fit my hand...after that, the leather was sanded, polished, and burnished to give it a shine...actually it turned out to be easier than I thought.
