redwinger Report post Posted April 27, 2008 I just found this web site through some of my friends...I'm fairly new to leather carving (did some a bunch of years ago, but it was trial and error on my part). I took a couple of classes at ther local Tandy store just to have some fun, and am getting back into it. I've done some leather upholstery work (mostly motorcycles), so if I can figure out how to post a picture or two, I've got one of my personal bike seat that I built (this seat has about 30,000 miles on it...that's why it's wrinkly on the front part...well used, and comfortable), and one of a leather carving maul I just got through making. I made the head out of black Delrin with a steel slug inside to give it weight...the slug is drilled and threaded, then a threaded rod is inserted...leather "washers" are glued and stacked to the length needed, and a nut and washer is screwed on to pull everything tight...then all of it is turned on a wood lathe to the desired profile...I just played with it until I got the shape and size I wanted, and to fit my hand...after that, the leather was sanded, polished, and burnished to give it a shine...actually it turned out to be easier than I thought.
