Thanks guys, but a rope knot is n't a honda--it's basically a braided knot made of rawhide that holds the rope to the horn--used when dallyin'.

I'm no calf roper, but it seems like if i remember right all the "rope knots" are are just some form or another of pinapple knots and there are all sorts of different variations of them and some tutorials are on this website.

Hope this helps, Ben

You could sure make a pineapple knot and maybe even use a piece of leather underneath, like a scarf slide. The way I have always made them out of nylon is to basically just use one strand and wrap the working end over the standing end around and around and around. You should probably do this 5 or 7 times depending on the size of the knot you want to make. Then on the next pass, you wrap the working end through the hole made from wrapping the working end over the standing end in the first pass. I know this may sound kind of confusing, but its really a simple knot to make. Im not sure how well it would work out using rawhide, because in order to secure the working end when you are finished, you just burn the nylon to the surrounding parts. If they are hard set on using rawhide, I would just make it like a large scarf slide.

Ben, as an old ropeworker, 'rope knots' go back a few thousand years and I have a feeling that Pineapple Knots are really a variation of a Turks Head and one of these days, I'm gonna see if I can find that Turks Head. lol

If you have Bruce Grant's Encyclopedia it is on page 208-209. He calls it a Saddle-Horn tie knot and it is the same as how you would make a bosel nose button.

Thanks a bunch for all the replies--guess it depends on what part of the country your from as to what it's called---but then, that goes for a lot of things.

Ben, one of Bruce Grant's books has a rope knot that I think you are refering to. It is basically a loose pineapple knot that the tail end of the rope can be looped thru, allowing you to "tie" your rope to the horn, but it also lets you get it off without having to cut your rope.

What you maybe asking for is used with roping hard and fast (calf-roper). The knot is use to release the rope off the saddle. The knot that I have seen used in South Texas (King Ranch) is the Bruce Grant Knot "Gaucho Knot of Three Passes with a long tail to assist the quick release. This knot is made of 1/4 in. X 1/8 rawhide. Any other knot or turk's head will work as long as it stout enough to take pressure. Smith Bro. in Denton, Tx. has a knot that is made of 1/4 braided nylon string and is hitched. They also show some made out of aluminum. But then that is of some other forum.

Has anyone seen a rope knot, or as I call it a horn knot, made out of leather?

I've variations of horn knots with nylon, paracord, and I've seen them make of rawhide.

But has anyone seen them made out of leather strings?

The only problem I can think of when making one begs the question of how you secure the ends.
