KnotHead Report post Posted October 18, 2010 Now I can make a price out for each item I make, or a price range for selling lace.
bullwhips Report post Posted October 18, 2010 Brian, You know you can get the roo skins from Paul Nolan at www.midwestwhips.com for $15 a foot for veg tanned drum stuffed. He has a variety of suppliers and usually has roo from Packers...and I know he's had roo from Taubman in the past. So in the future you could save quite a bit of money getting it from Paul. KnotHead Report post Posted October 18, 2010 I like that pricing and it'd be quicker to get to me too. Hmmm. The next bit a money goin into this one. Thanks Louie.
8thsinner Report post Posted October 18, 2010 So your thinking of selling lace too? What sort of prep?
Alberta Bound Report post Posted October 18, 2010 I emailed Hardtke recently and they also have drum stuffed Packer roo for $11.35. I haven't ordered from them before but I've heard some good things. Decent prices too, but I'm not sure what their shipping would be like.
roo4u Report post Posted October 18, 2010 their rates are very reasonable...just the regular ups shipping when i order from them and i usually do cod as well
bullwhips Report post Posted October 18, 2010 Brian, One of the cool things about getting roo from Paul is that he's in the Las Vegas area, so it's cheap to ship to us in Washington State and it's usually here the 2nd day! Louie

Louie Does that $15 include shipping? And what colors does he have? I just paid for mine I'll have to do the math. I do adore my supplier though so there would have to be pretty good difference in price. I just noticed.... 11.35! How is that possible! entiendo Report post Posted October 18, 2010 It does appear that I pay 16.35 a square foot if my math is correct. Thanks roo, I would have never thought to figure it out. It's one of those things, you pay what it costs. I'd break down the string cost but that would be way to much trouble so I'll leave it there.
8thsinner Report post Posted October 18, 2010 Or quality presumably... Thats given me an idea, but I will not change this thread too much further.
bullwhips Report post Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) The $15 from midwestwhips is without shipping. The advantage of getting from a whip maker instead of a leather supplier is they usually sort their skins by what a whip maker would want. Leather suppliers like Hardtke don't sort it the same way, you can request certain characteristics, but you don't know if you'll get them until it arrives. For example if you call Paul Nolan or David Morgan and say you want to make a six foot whip, they will sell you a great hide for that. If you call hardtke and say you want to make a six foot whip...they'll send you what they have (which isn't necessarily what you want). You can't beat hardtke on price...I order a ton from them, but never know exactly what I'm getting until it shows up. With Paul or David if I'm looking for skins to make a pair of whips I'll get two skins that will make a great pair of whips. So for me I use hardtke when I'm blindly ordering skins with no specific project in mind, and I order from a whip maker is I need skins for a specific project. I'm amazed that more people don't do or haven't done the math to figure out what things cost. To me that's a very big deal, if I"m paying a lot per square foot I want a skin that I"m not going to have to trim a lot off of, otherwise I'm throwing a way a lot of money. On the other hand if it's inexpensive I don't mind cutting out a bit more stretchy area. One more thing you always have to consider when figuring out your square foot cost is the exchange rate. For example right now the US dollar and the Australian dollar are almost even, so I'd buy from an US source right now. However a few months ago there was almost a 15% difference which would have been a better time to deal with an Australian source than right now. KnotHead Report post Posted October 18, 2010 I don't mind getting my hides a bit quicker. But I do mind the quality. I don't do whip braiding much. As a matter of fact I have never braided a whip yet. But I do a lot of micro braiding up to dog leash braiding. Most of that kind of braiding requires the hide to be consistent. If I get a really nice hide and the hide is a bit thicker than what I want, I have a splitter that I can use. Even with the hides I have now, the micro braiding I do still requires me to split the strand before I bevel. So getting a thicker hide really for me what make much of a difference. That midwest whips and hardkey and Taubman & Webb seem to be the best in hides. I will use all three when I have more money to throw at them. LOL... I need to play and win the Lotto. LOL... Brian... Alberta Bound Report post Posted October 18, 2010 Has anyone figured out the different in price between Taubmann and the Packer Outlet when hides are shipped to the US or Canada? I know that packer is cheaper by the square foot but I'm curious to see if the difference is very noticeable in the end.
KnotHead Report post Posted October 19, 2010 Hmmm. Interesting question.
roo4u Report post Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) and remember that hardtke gets their hides from packer as well...now i dont braid whips but when i was still wholesaling kangaroo leashes i used a bunch of roo from them and split it down pretty darn thin and never had any breakage problems. when i first started buying roo from them it was 6.50 a sq ft...oh man i miss those prices! its actually pretty easy to calculate how much an item is costing you....measure the diameter of the circle that you get when you cut your hide...then go to one of the lace calculators online...you just put in lace size and center hole size if you cut from the middle and it will tell you how many yds or feet or whatever you will get...so i just put in the next size up form the avg size i use...get my total possible feet from circle and then take my hide cost and tada...a per whatever cost for my lace...a little more simple math...length of lace x how many laces and i will know how much it cost me to make that bracelet or leash. bullwhips Report post Posted October 21, 2010 (edited) I just had three kangaroo skins come in from hardtke: The Black is 52 decimeters square, the red is 59 decimeters square and the natural tan is 49 decimeters square. So that you have a point of reference for the size of the kangaroo skins the dog .75 pup-imeters square. These has same small imperfections but all in all they are good skins...now to dream up a few projects to make.... entiendo Report post Posted October 22, 2010 I decided to call them! LOL I ordered 2 hides..couldn't help myself at that price. I ordered a natural and a black and he's sending me a sample of the tan. I just might try my hand at selling string at that price. I can use some extra Christmas money and I like to cut it. And I could try romel reins! I've always been so careful with every piece of string. He said they are larger hides too, that mean less waste over all. I keep thinking I did the math wrong, but I did it again and it seems I'm right. Of course I'll still need my wonderful supplier in Australia because I use a lot of color so I don't feel terribly bad. I'm so excited!
