rawhide1 Report post Posted November 25, 2010 Howdy all It seems like a awful long time since I've braided anything or posted. It seems all I've been making is strap goods for firefighters such as radio holders, glove holders and truck belts. Although I like to make such gear and it pays pretty good I do miss braiding. So here's the problem I got a order for some 8 strand rawhide roping reins which is great. But I can't seem to find my notebook with all my measurements for string width for different size cores. And I can't seem to remember the numbers to figure the width out. I'm using a 3/16 leather core. So if someone could throw the formula out for me I would be greatly indebted. Thanks in advance Mike
rgerbitz Report post Posted November 25, 2010 I don't have a formula but I would think that some string in a 3-4 /32 width and about 1.5 - 2/32 thickness would work out pretty good.
TwinOaks Report post Posted November 25, 2010 I think I read it on here that to have it evenly spaced, you need to divide the circumference by the number of strands to get the strand width. In this case, 3/16ths x PI (I simplified to '3' to get the circumference) divided by 8 (the number of strands you want), = a little over 1/16th of an inch....or about 3/32.....like Rgerbitz said. I just wanted to mention the 'formula' for finding the strand width.
Bevan Report post Posted November 25, 2010 Howdy all Gday Mike try this core diam x 4.5div by the the number of strings you want to use This is the formula I use when I make a whip or bosal Lets say the core is 12mm 12 X4.5= 54 devide that by the number of strings 16=3.375 , so i bill cut and prep my strings to finish at 3.4 mmand will get a nice and neat cover over the core I hope this helps Cheers Bevan http://www.bwrwhips.com/
rawhide1 Report post Posted November 26, 2010 Hey Thanks fellas for taking the time to help me out. It's much appreciated. Hopefully I can start cutting strings in a few days and get to braiding. These reins wont be anything fancy but at least it some braiding to do. Thanks again, Mike
