redhat4201 Report post Posted November 25, 2010 (edited) Hello everyone. These are my 4th and 5th attempt at a pancake style holster for 1911. Thanks to everyone for all the pictures and information. If anyone has any ideas to make these any better please let me know. Edited November 25, 2010 by redhat4201

TwinOaks Report post Posted November 25, 2010 Welcome to Leatherworker.net! The holsters look good, but IMO, the belt loop holes are a bit large. At that size they can allow movement of the holster independent of the belt. Also, on the reinforcement pad, it needs to wrap around the top of the gun more to provide better resistance to closing. A little bit tighter molding will help with retention, but since you don't mention what weight leather you used, it's hard to say just how much was possible. With 6-7oz, you could get a lot more, but if you made that out of 12oz, it may be all you could get.
GrampaJoel Report post Posted November 25, 2010 Well they look as good as any I have made so I will ask a question instead of offering a critique. What is the purpose of the little stand-alone piece on the front of the holster?

Big O Report post Posted November 26, 2010 (edited) Nice molding and stitching, and BEAUTIFUL edges! I haven't yet been able to achieve edges like that. The holsters are very........angular. I'd put in some curves. I'd probably want the stitching to follow the bottom edge of the slide, just in front of the dust cover, a bit closer. (Note: I HAVE gotten that a bit TOO close before.....) And, with that much space between the pistol compartment and the belt slots, I'd feel more comfortable with some stitching along the inside of the belt slots, rather than just the outsides. My belt slot cutting technique has evolved to this: Punch holes using a 3/8" punch, and connect-the-dots with a 1" chisel. One of these days I might just splurge on a bag punch and simplify the process. Edited November 26, 2010 by Big O
TwinOaks Report post Posted November 26, 2010 GrandpaJoel, the little stand alone piece is intended to be a reinforcing tab. It's purpose is to prevent the holster from closing when the gun is drawn, thereby facilitating re-holstering. As it is positioned in the photos, I don't think there's enough of the tab wrapped around the top of the pistol to provide the support/resistance that prevents the closure of the holster.
