KnotHead Report post Posted December 8, 2010 Well, got my Saddle Tan all cut. Here's a photo of what I ended up with. Conversions; 24,688.8 MM 2,468.88 CM 24.6888 M 0.0247 KM 972 IN 81 FT 0.0153 MI The cutting of the hide would've only taken me about 20mins. But the phone kept ringing because I am on call until Saturday. Sometimes, I wish I could retire and just leather braid for a living. Wont get rich. But I'm not in it to get rich anyway. LOL... Bevan Report post Posted December 8, 2010 Well done Brian I bet you are stoked with your hides, but now you have cut your lace, after stretching what is the finished width going to be of your cut lace ? When I cut lace for a bosal, I might be looking for 3mm finished lace for a nose button, and 4.5mm to cover the rawhide core , so i will cut a 25mm strip , after stretching i will cut that strip into my strands ,getting 4 strands at 4mm wide to resize and bevelle so i have enough 3mm strands for my nose button , with the rest of the 25mm strip i will cut 3 strings at 5mm , resize and bevel to cover the core with a 12 or 16 plait , with the bike seat shape peice of leather left over i will get my tandy lace cutter and get a heap of lace 5 mm wide that i will resize for the heel knot and spanish ring knots, I also will cut the hind legs and tail off first so i can cover my stock whip handles out of them, most of my hides come in at around the 6.4 or 6.6 dm mark It took me awhile to work out but this works for me and with what i do and I am sure you have got your hides all worked out aswell , best of luck mate and happy braiding !! KnotHead Report post Posted December 8, 2010 I am thinking 1/8 for a project I have to finish. That's a lot of string in that tub. The rest, after the project is done, I will probably make some key fobs and necklaces and bracelets and so on. The stretching is just about like any other lace. Just more of it and a little wider. Mostly it's just stretching it to straighten it enough to cut it down, and then stretching some more as you go. Brian...

I wont be coming out my dungeon for a while. LOL... Brian...

acox4t4 Report post Posted December 15, 2010 I'm scared to death to cut my hides. I cut around the edges to make it as round as possible and was to scared to cut it so I took the outer pieces to pratice on. The I'm guessing leg area was a pretty good size piece so I gave cutting that a try and I did terrible. I didn't get a single piece of lace made out of it. Don't know if I didn't cut it wide enough or what. when I took the piece then tried to streatch it the best I could, I then tried to cut it down to where it would be a straight piece of lace and nope I couldn't get a single piece to look good. How wide should my first cut be?? And out of that first cut do you only get one piece of lace?? If you cut around in one circle 1 inch wide do you only get 1 piece of lace 1/8 inch wide???? with me totally striking out with that first effort I'm scared to death I'm going to ruin my two hides and waste 200.00. HEHE the 2 flopped cowhides at $30.00 doesn't seem to bad when I'm now looking at flopping up $200.00 worth of hide.
