Managing Wrinkles

Hi guys,

I'm working on a credit card case and I'd like to use the 4 oz leather I already have to make something really durable. The problem is, that when I open it after wet molding, there are a lot of creases in the spine. Is there anything I can do to minimize this? I have both veg tan and bridle leather available.

When I make a business card holder I don't wet mold it. I just make it a bit oversize and just let the everyday use of it sort of forms it to the shape, sort of wear forming if you will. However without seeing pictures of what it is exactly that you are making and where the wrinkles are it's hard to say if that would work for that or not.

On a card case I made I had used a thicker lining than planned and the card area came out way too small. To 'fix' the problem I used a ball tip modeling tool (available from Tandy) and worked the interior sides of the card area as I would in Repousse' work. This stretched the leather enough that I was able to use the case as intended from the beginning. In Repousse you're really forming the leather anyway so it serves the same purpose.

I don't wet form the crease in my card holders either. I fold them over and run a brayer along the crease a few times. This will make it stay mostly closed and the rest comes quickly with use.

You can also gouge the inside of the fold with a 'v' gouge. The removes leather on the inside of the fold, which means the outside of it doesn't have to stretch as much.
